I would have never guessed 7 months later I'd still be snowboarding in May, and on top of that very peak. . Hiking from the top of Aggasiz chairlift to the top of Aggasiz Peak (12,360 ft), I hoped I'd get to see the Inner Basin again. Hands freezing and exhausted, I saw a guy make the summit and decided I could too. The reward was the same feeling that is hard to describe but from a different perspective. . The ride down was one of the best runs of the season because I knew I made that last push, and because I knew it was my last. It was worth it. ❤️ you 3000 Arizona. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #innerbasintrail #fall #fallcolors #fallsnow #winteriscoming #kachinapeakswilderness #hiking #snow #snowhiking #flagstaff #az #arizona #autumn #autumn🍁 #outdoors #sanfranciscopeaks #snowbowl #goldenleaves #aggasizpeak #azsnowbowl #snowboarding #snowbowlaz #backcountry #backcountrysnowboarding #gopro at Agassiz Peak

Soaking in a full run of Gully 1 from the ski patrol hut out to Friedland prairie road. One for the ages with deep, sticky, unwieldy powder. Stopping for too long translated into ice deposits underfoot and super tedious turns. One of the most memorable runs yet. . . . #sanfranciscopeaks #kachinapeakswilderness #azbackcountry #azsnowbowl #stopandsink #elniño #illestofniños #jahbless #optoutside #findmeoutside #powderdays #sticksarfing #sarfsup #commenceheavybreathing #adventureisthespiceoflife #kooksinparadise at Agassiz Peak

Powder days aren't for everyone. This lil' guy is currently sawing logs, snoring away in his doggie bed after one epic day in the Kachina Peaks backcountry. The Peaks delivered some amazing terrain on the south-westerly flanks of Aggassiz and Ill Niño hooked us up with some dense desert snow overnight and throughout the day. Skinning up and skiing out with @danesteadman was slow going, while we waited for this eager pup to catch up to us, but seeing his lil' stump tail wiggle with joy made it all worth it. . . . #azbackcountry #kachinapeakswilderness #sanfranciscopeaks #optoutside #badnboozie #stoked #dogsofinstagram #dogsofthebackcountry #backcountry #backcountryskiing #earnyourturns #hiketoski #uphillskier #adventureisthespiceoflife #findmeoutside #powderdays at Agassiz Peak

The season is here! Hauled the sticks up to 12,000' above Arizona to run one hot, 1000' lap on the southern edge of Temptations from the ridge. Sharks nipped underfoot at least seven or so times, but the bases still look decent... for desert skis. I made a nearly grave error by getting lured into the main drainage where the real monsters lurk, so heed warning... stay as far left as possible, until we get some better coverage. A lot of side-slipping, side-stepping, and route-finding once back in the trees almost made me question how stupid this is to try and ski in AZ during October, especially 2 weeks after the last storm. But now that I'm off the mountain... worth it. . . . #sanfranciscopeaks #kachinapeakswilderness #azbackcountry #backcountryski #desertskiing #earnyourturns #hiketoski #racethesun #earlyseason #sodumb #rockskis #upcomingdatewithptex #illgetthecandles at Kachina Peaks Wilderness

Ahhhhhh- such a delicious, much needed day in the warm Sun, listening to the song of dry, golden aspen leaves and the magnificence of the life coming up where the incredibly hot Shultz Fire burned the entire side of the mountains, over 15,000 acres, in 2010. A truly delicious day!!😍 . . . #schultzpass #kachinapeakswilderness #coconinonationalforest #mountains #trailrunning #autumn #playingoutside #flagstaff #forestfires #healthyforests #regrowth #aspentrees #autumncolors🍁 at Kachina Peaks Wilderness

An unfinished little watercolor inspired by @wanderin_exposures 's wonderful description of these mountains, just outside beautiful #flagstaffarizona . I adore this place so much, and they are incredibly sacred and special to so many. A long time ago, a Hopi elder from Moenkopi who carves Katsina kindly and generously regaled me with stories of the Peak's significance for Hopi religious practices, as home to the Katsina, and the Wikipedia page describes these mountains as follows :"The Wilderness encompasses most of the upper reaches of the San Francisco Peaks including Humphreys Peak, Arizona's highest point at 12,643 feet (3,854 m). The area is named for the Hopi gods, or Kachinas, whom according to Hopi mythology live here for part of every year. In mid-summer these Gods fly from the top of the peaks to the Hopi mesas as clouds bringing the rains of the seasonal monsoons. These peaks are sacred to tribes including the Havasupai, Hopi, Navajo, and Zuni. Several religious shrines have been identified in the Wilderness, some of which are still in use." #savethepeaks #boycottsnowbowl #sacredpeaks #kachinapeakswilderness #coconinonationalforest #kachinapeaks #sacredmountains #archespaper #watercolorpainting #naturelovers at Colorado Plateau

sPooky ok but in all seriousness. i just love how fog facilitates this natural isolation of the subject of one’s vision (or thoughts) from the backdrop of excess stimuli that is the cluttered, noisy world we live in. anything that lies too far ahead is shrouded in a blanket of opacity/obscurity, but as one progresses forward in both space and time, background evolves into foreground and future into present, and anything that was meant to come into focus does so, while everything that lies behind fades into oblivion. it results in a strangely insistent but beautiful reminder to focus only on that which is most immediately present, both visually and mentally, both spatially and temporally. ok im done byE at Flagstaff, Arizona

What a week of #elkhunting in the #kachinapeakswilderness looks like. 52.53 total miles hiked between 8,500' and 11,000' above sea level with a total elevation gain of 8861.5'...almost all of that was off trail back-country hiking through snow, over deadfalls, under branches, and other mentally and physically exhausting obstacles. I was lucky to have great gear like my #underarmour #infilops #goretex waterproof boots to keep my feet comfortable, my Under Armour #ridgereaper clothes to keep me warm and dry from rain/snow/sweat, my @darntoughvermont socks to keep my feet cozy in all conditions, and my light weight Savage hunter 110 by my side. . . . @garminoutdoor @garminfishhunt @garmin @uahunt @underarmour @ihuntfit #beatyesterday @gowhereyoudontbelong #huntinglife #elkhunter #huntingseason @savagearms #bullelk @wildernessathlete @backcountryhunters

The heartbreaking beauty of finding pools of water cradled amongst the full spectrum of forest and mountain ecosystem, snowmelt and rainwater in the talus slopes of Kendrick. Many of the incredibly old Aspen (Populus tremuloides) and Western White Pine (Pinus Monticola) are wonderfully gnarled, small, full of character and stories, electric lichen thrives, and the sacred slopes of the Kachina Peaks glowed in their snowy splendor last night, as snow spilled down every slope, soft, deep powder reflecting the perfect southwest light as elks bugled and downy woodpeckers squeaked their adorable selves while exploring their burned trees for food at the summit. I don't have the right words to describe the wonder that fills me from so much life and beauty. . . . #kachinapeakswilderness #kachinapeaks #coconinonationalforest #playingoutside #hikingfindings #forestecosystems

I was captivated by the delicate lace of Aspen branchlets reaching for the stormy autumn skies. This special forest felt like it invited me in, and the large elk roaming in it, though the forest is snug, moved gracefully, so quietly, not far from where I explored. Pure magic! Just a little bit later, we were in the heart of an intense thunder, lightning, hail storm that made the forest feel even more incredibly alive 😍. . . . #aspentrees #kachinapeakswilderness #autumntowinter #forests #magicalnature #flagstaff at Kachina Peaks Wilderness

That simple, bare happiness of going into the first snow, picking the mountain that calls out to you in a little, bright song, and spending time with it all day, exploring her ridges, windy bits, the deer that curiously walk by, and the ever-changing views all around. Wild flowers had gotten surprised by the snow, having taken the opportunity to bloom with late summer monsoon rains, and the air tasted fresh, purifying, a delicious flavor of desert and alpine mixing together in a long-ago burn. . . #firstsnow #wildfires #ridges #desertsnow #naturephotography #flagstaff #kachinapeakswilderness #mountains #sanfranciscopeaksaz at Kachina Peaks Wilderness
