Like shark-spotters along the beaches of Amity Island, the TWHFFC has spent the past 13 days of February raising awareness and sounding the alarm on some of the incredible women within the genre who tirelessly toil to make horror as relevant and potent a platform as possible. Like the genre itself, these individuals are women inside the industry who refuse to die, who refuse to stay silent in a grave of under-representation. Behold, and feast upon their immoveable power...we bring you: the MAVENS OF THE MACABRE! 💀🦈🎞 We'll assume that, by now, everybody knows one of the most terrifying films of all time was billowing with production nightmares. It was May of 1974, and a race against time to shoot principal photography without a script on the troublesome waters of the Atlantic...and without a man-eating mechanical shark that never worked, let alone often looked outright ridiculous. No one can deny Peter Benchley's horrifying story or the magnetic power of Spielberg's vision, but at the end of the day it was Verna Fields, colloquially referred to as “Mother Cutter,” who made JAWS come together, quite literally, by brilliantly piecing together miles of film resulting in the 1975 aquatic thriller we know and love. Fields, born Verna Hellman in 1918, proved an integral talent for manipulating sound and vision, resulting in audience reactions so potent that a pneumatic shark named Bruce single-handedly kept lines of moviegoers wrapped around theater buildings in the summer of ‘75. Verna won an Academy Award for her work on JAWS—and received a level of recognition unheard of for editors at that time—but she would also rise rapidly to the top level of Universal Studios management, taking on the position of Feature Production Vice President before passing away in 1982 at age 64. We’ll forever remember Verna Fields as a legend and an icon, challenging the status quo, and for delivering a gift that keeps on giving every July 4th. 💀 ♀️💀 The TWHFFC continues to proudly unearth and expose the monstrously integral impact of #womeninhorror all month long, Fiends...JOIN US!
