Relentless. This young Northern Harrier tried everything to get some food, even plunged at full speed to the water from high above (normally you see them hunting horizontally, close to the ground) trying to grab some waterfowl, but all was in vain. This is a series of three shots showing the female peregrine in my previous post taking off from her initial landing site with prey, and her mate perched quietly elsewhere. If you look carefully there is blood on the male’s stomach feathers. I considered enlarging each of these images so that the raptors could be more prominent but ultimately decided against doing so because I think it’s really nice to be able to see these peregrines contextualized in their habitat. Northern Yellow-Shafted Flicker Woodpecker (Male). I was trying out the legacy/vintage manual focus lens that I won from eBay for $57 dollars. A Vivitar 120-600mm f5.6 with a 2X Vivitar teleconverter mounted to my Sony a6500, when this male Yellow-Shafted Flicker appeared. I struggled to manually focus despite the IBIS in the Sony and using a tripod. At approximately 500-600 yards away, this bird keeps moving and by the time I nailed focus using the magnifier, the bird has already shifted position. This thing was built like a tank!
