How I saved my client a whole lot of money and stress by helping her set goals.
When I first my client, she came to me wanting help with saving for a house deposit. When we first started talking about her goals, she was focused on buying her first home. Getting to know her, something just wasn’t sitting well with me about this. It just didn’t seem to fit in with some of the other things that she was saying.
I decided to dive a little deeper with her and find out WHY she wanted to buy a house to help me understand how we can best manage her money.
It actually just came down to what she was always told that she should do. It’s very ingrained into our Aussie culture. You grow up, buy a house, get married, pay that house off, retire and travel around in a caravan - it’s the great Australian dream. Problem is, a lot of people don’t want to do that any more.
Speaking more about the things that she loved and the life that she wanted to live, we worked out that she actually wanted to be a nomad and travel the world while she worked. She wanted to explore and see where she ended up. When push comes to shove, buying a house and fixing her to one permanent location would have been one of the worst possible things she could have done. It would have made her miserable because she wants to travel with no permanent address, and she would have had so much money tied in a property that she would have ended up resenting.
Instead, we focused on managing her money in ways that would allow her to have this sense of freedom and travel around. Buying a home wasn’t and isn’t the only option.
Taking the time to really work out what’s important to you, is just as important as managing your money. Without knowing the life that you want, it could end up costing you a lot of money and unhappiness!
Have you ever changed your mind about a goal?
