A MEDITATION ON EXPANSION, CONTRACTION, AWARENESS// Open your hand. Really look. Look at the architecture of this incredible part of your body. Notice the shape of your own hand, the negative space between each finger and thumb. What does the landscape of your skin look like - the whorls, the fine lines cross hatched and etched into furrows. Focus on the centre of your palm, perhaps sensing like the beating of your heart, that this is the centre of all things. Awareness divining the electricity of nerves, an urge to spread your palm wide, extending outward beyond the edges of your fingertips. Through this expansion notice the smoothing of the furrows and fine lines. As you open, reach until the instinct is to contract back, softly enclosing back to centre fingers curl in as skin puckers, furrows become crevices.
Now think how the rhythmic actions of expansion and contraction characterise how we breathe, the way our heart pumps oxygenated blood through the body in interchange with diaphragm and lungs. This rhythmic ode reverberates beyond the mechanical exchanges of our body’s relationship to itself, expressing itself as the rhythm through which we experience life - a constant expansion and contraction with the world around us. We pulse, ebb and flow in relationship with ourselves and others though often we forget how to be aware, to be in interchange and connected to the fullness of the universal rhythms.
Now place your hands to your heart - feel its beat, pulse, flow and notice the expansion and contraction of breath and heart together. Think about actions of heartfelt openness: arms enfolding, enclosing, reaching and embracing. What about those actions in which we push away, close off, protect, defend? The degree to which we maintain physical balance between what is outside and our inner being is often reflected in how we hold our upper torso and arms. In rigidity lies stasis, defensiveness- by relaxing our movements and allowing them to flow we can physically reduce stress on heart and lungs and be more at ease with the world. #expansion #contraction #interchange #yoga #flow #yogateacher #movingmeditations #awareness #rhythmsoflife
