Tonight’s tipple is courtesy of One Gin which is this months gin in the now sold out box!
A gold award winning recipe that marries nine-core botanicals from around the globe with one signature botanical.
One Gin has a very admirable backstory. One was founded in 2005 as a bottled water brand to raise funds for water projects in the world’s poorest communities. One Gin continues this mission, contributing to the aim of raising 20 million by 2020. It’s ethically sound, but putting this aside does it stand up on its own in a saturated gin market?
The answer is yes! One Gin have combined forces with Blackdown Distillery Master Distiller Sarah Thompson, and the result is special. Having discovered this ourselves at Tales of the Cocktail in Edinburgh last year we were really impressed by the team behind the brand, it’s design but most importantly it’s flavour. It’s an aromatic little number, full of herbaceous charm, that really captured our imagination neat, and as a gin and tonic.
Botanicals include Angelica Root (France), Cassia Bark (India), Coriander (Eastern Europe), Juniper (The Balkans), Lemon Peel (Spain), Liquorice Root (Mediterranean), Nutmeg (West Indies), Orange Peel (Spain), Orris Root (Italy) along with the signature botanical which is Sage (England).
On the nose this has a sweetness thanks to the citrus, along with piney juniper presence, but it’s the signature sage that really shines providing hints of what’s to come. To taste the herbaceous elements in particular Sage really open up and take charge, juniper remains present, there’s layers of citrus to add balance, and spice thanks to cassia and nutmeg that keep things interesting. Whilst sage is powerful it’s more than a one trick pony; smooth, savoury, with a finish that is expertly satisfying.
A delicious gin with a truly ethical conscience, be sure to check it out.
