Just when I thought I was ready to submit this paper, I found another new species of soldier fly from the material on loan from the @qldmuseum. This one is code named "Bigbum yellowtip" because it has unique wings with yellow tips! This is my favourite groups of flies I've ever worked on because they are rainbow with big bums. Can't wait to get it published! Any name suggestions?

Meet Hermini. My 7 year old, Paisley named her. She said “let’s name her Hermini! Like Hermione but mini since she’s a mini. Get it mama?” #prayingmantis

Without bees, the human race could not survive! According to the American Beekeeping Federation, honey bees contribute almost $20 billion in value to U.S. crop production each year! Many crops would not even exist without the honey bee such as the almond that relies entirely on bee pollination to keep it alive! Remember this next time you go to squish that bee buzzing around your face 🐝 Photo by Behzad Ghaffarian at Almond Orchards

Dirce beauty Lepidoptera, Nymphalidae These butterflies are real garbage pickers; drinking from almost anything they can find, including feces. This one was drinking from a decomposing melon husk. The caterpillars of these butterflies feed on cecropia trees of tropical forests. The cecropia is often described as the “mother” tree because it nourishes so many different organisms (sloths, monkeys, ants, butterflies, etc.), and is a prominent member of secondary growth or recovering forests. After deforestation or a tree fall, the fast growing cecropia sets in and brings all the animals with it, nurturing recovering food webs. . . . . #macro #macrophotography #macroworld_tr #nature #ecology #arthropoda #entomology #insect #lepidoptera #butterfly #insectsofinstagram #insects_of_our_world #insectphotography #insectguru #macro_holic #invert_macro #ill_macros #arthropod_perfection #macro_spotlight #macro_creature_feature #macro_freaks #ip_insects at Rincón, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

This little dragonfly almost seems to be smiling for the camera. Someday I would like to get into macro photography and really bring out what the smaller things in life have to offer. • • • • #dragonfly #insect #insectsofinstagram #dragonflyphotography #insectphotography #bugslife #bugsofinstagram #macro #macrophotography #naturephotography #nature #bokeh #bokehphotography #nature_photo #goexplore #getoutside #optoutside #adventurephotography #nikon #nikonphotography #nikond3300 #d3300 #dslr #dslrphotography

This #damselfly , like all odonates, has excellent vision. Dragonflies and damselflies, both incredibly fast flyers and formidable predators, have some of the most advanced vision in the insect world. Like many other orders, odonates have compound eyes. These are composed of thousands of individual eye components called ommatidia. Where a human eye has a single lens to focus light and a retina covered in photoreceptors (light sensing structures), each individual ommatidium is made up of one lens and one receptive structure made up of a few photoreceptors cells, called the rhabdom. Odonates have especially good color vision; as with color sensing in human eyes, one color sensor can only sense one color. In humans, structures in cones called opsin proteins sense red, green, and blue wavelengths of light. The combination of the three additive primary colors gives us the full range of colors we can see. However, most odonates have four or five different color receptors, giving them a much greater range of color vision. A dragonfly’s compound eye is the largest of any insect’s, and could be made up of 30,000 ommatidia. • • • • • • • • • #arthropoda #arthropods #odonata #damselflies #odonates #vision #compoundeye #ommatidia #colorvision #eyes #zygoptera #insect #insectphotography #insect_guru #macrointhewild #macrophotography #nature #naturalism #naturephotography #raw_insects #insectsofinstagram #invertmacro #entomology #buglife #instabug #macronature #naturelovers #bugs

Considering I'm headed back to CR soon, here's a flashback in the shape of a beautiful golden orb-web spider (nephila clavipes) that was working by my bedroom window last December. If you want a nerdy fact: a single thread of the anchor silk has a tensile strength of 4×109 N/m2, which exceeds that of steel by a factor of eight (ultimate strength of steel 500x106 N/m2). Let's save the spiders as well! #savethespiders #savethespiders🕷 #spider #spidersoftheworld #spider #costarican #costarica🇨🇷 #costarica #costaricagram #descubrecostarica #puravidalife #puravida #puravidamae #beautiful_world #beautiful #beautifulday #spidersofinstagram #wildlife #insectsofinstagram #insects at Costa Rica

These little critters are Extatosoma tiaratum, also known as Macleays spectre leaf insects. We just call ‘em Aussies, since they hail from the island continent of Australia. They live in eucalyptus trees alongside their neighbors, koala bears! Here in Columbus, Ohio, their caretakers at The Ohio State University insectary cut sprigs of pyracantha for them to eat. When we take them out for outreach events, they tend to be the stars of the show. Sometimes, they even do a little dance!

Smaller yellow butterflies often go unnoticed as they are so plentiful and have an extended flight period lasting nearly 8 months in my area. Seeing them close up opens a world of color and intricacy, displayed by this Clouded Sulphur nestled into the lower half of a goldenrod stalk. September 2014.
