Swim 7 - Breaking 20
(Week 3 - Thursday)
My usual pool was under maintenance until Saturday, and I am also adjusting my weekly swim schedule. The new swim shorts arrived, and the pool time was half an hour earlier. Everything was not usual tonight.
Noticing that the lanes were narrower and slower ones had consistent traffic, I started with my float and glide drill - only to stop when I practically breathed in the dividers, my tilt an overreaction to stay on my side of the lane. I meandered to the leisure area and did a few float in place exercise to review my balance. This was not going to be a typical drill day.
Breaking the rule of ‘practice only what you want to make permanent,’ I tested out my freestyle stroke - bringing each drill element in one length at a time. I was sloppy, yoyoing as I balanced my hip turn with my head to stay centered. I knew I shouldn’t do this, but I wanted to see if I can.
If 20 strokes in 25m was possible for someone at my progress.
And I did. For one length, my arms moved in slow motion as the water rushed past me. My toes - not my knees - flicked. The hips turned on their own to move the body out of the hands’ way on the return stroke. My head stayed leveled, aligning with my hip when I needed to breathe.
The whole body in symphony.
I touched the wall, stared at my hands in awe. This is possible. And I wasn’t tired or really out of breath.
I turned to look at the swimmer in front, about half length away.
Legs to wall. Pushed.
Not kicking harder, or spinning faster. One hand waiting for the other before a stroke. Hips swaying more naturally.
3/4 length. 17 strokes. Caught up.
I smiled as I slowed toward the wall. Then promptly tried too hard to replicate, losing my form as I got tired. Practice over.
My fear of embarrassment was still stronger - but I will work on that Sunday. I can glide backwards straight.
