This pretty much sums up my day today! 2 different starters used for 3 different doughs to bake 4 different loaves! Listen if this weather doesn't clear up enough for me to start getting outside on the weekends I'm going to continue doing this and I'm not gonna fit into my choring clothes come spring🤭😳😂 #ncweatherproblems #ncweather #monsoon #bread #adventuresinsourdough #sourdough #spentgrainbread #italianherbloaf #breadbaking #suburbanhomestead #uhlhomestead #homesteadlife #iamcountryside

Just a little natural light and 😍 I was able to quickly snap some photos of these before popping them into the incubator this afternoon (Baby farmer realllllyyyy wanted to play with the eggs, so this was a very quick shot.) . Harvest days are one of our favorite days on the farm. It feels good packing our birds on ice knowing what they ate, how they were raised, and how they were processed.🐓

Mr. Fancy pants Langshan coming at ya. . Yeah, he is pretty studly. But doesn't have the attitude which is the best part. Sweetest Rooster EVER! Serious. They make the softest sounds that are unique to the Langshan. At least all mine do! Its hard to explain until you hear it. . We have these in our chick and hatching egg collection. First duck egg from one of our three ladies 🦆 🥚. Our ducks were born in July so it’s about time they stop freeloading 😂. It’s just a smidge larger than a leghorn’s egg (duck egg left, leghorn egg right), and if it wasn’t for the mild color difference I would have easily guessed either Elsa or Snowflake laid two eggs today. #ducksofinstagram

#FARMacy It’s not fancy, there’s no greenhouse (yet), but it’s a dream come true. One of my huge goals is focused around growing all heirloom foods, babying the seedlings, up-potting, watering, fertilizing. A labor of love. This summer as I harvest all of this food, half of it will be donated. It’s my Farmacy. I want to be a resource for people who don’t have access to farm fresh food. Real food. I don’t need to know your story. Or your why. I just want y’all to have warm from the sun tomatoes, and herbs to garnish your salads. Heck, I’m growing you salad. Anyone local to the Kansas City, MO area- stay in touch, stay updated. (I’m 25 miles north) Tag your people. 🙂 Happy Saturday! Cheers.

Beekeeping is HAAAAAAAARD. It is easily one of the most fascinating, frustrating and unforgiving hobbies that I practice. But the rewards are immense with the abundant pollination and fresh honey. I’m very green—only having kept hives for three summers and I’m painfully ashamed to admit that I’ve not managed to see one survive the winter yet. But I am learning more and more every year and I’m hoping the now silent apiary will revive with the buzzing of bees permanently this spring. I’m determined! .. If you’re considering keeping hives, I think the following titles are worth adding to your how-to library: 1. The Beekeeper’s Handbook 2. The Beekeeper’s Problem Solver 3. The Beekeepers Bible 4. Honeybee Democracy 5. The Hive and the Honeybee

These guys crack me up 😆 they’re so flexible. Often when we fill up their water trough they come sit right beside it and lay their necks in the water. The other day I was able to massage their feet whilst they were eating and it feels so much like a lizard! They really are beautifully misunderstood. I was so wary of the emus at the zoo whenever we visited as they idea of feeding from my hand to those giant beaks was kind of terrifying but having raised these two from chicks has been so wonderful 😍

Dream and dream and dream some more I dropped out of college, I’ve flipped burgers on markets, swept floors in hairdressers, worked as cabin crew, driven delivery vans you name it but I never really found my passion and place until Backfield Farm began To build a farm from nothing on little to no pennies, learning and hard work was key. I had to learn how to look after my own sheep, alpacas, pigs, geese, ducks and chickens. Vaccinate, treat, medicate, shear, cut toe nails, cut teeth, learn to grow food, how to keep bees, how to build shelters, plaster, build walls, concrete, work with steel, Learn carpentry to a level Myself and my animals could live in what I made, upcycle and recycle every bit of furniture or pallets I could find. It’s taken blood, sweat, tears and broken bones to get the farm where it is today from one muddy field at 24years old with 4 sheep to now over 170 animals and I couldn’t be prouder of what the farm has become I can finally say I have found a path for me and one for the rest of my life If you have a dream, believe in it, think creatively, buy every book, learn learn and learn some more! If you have a dream/goal in life MAKE IT HAPPEN we hit some serious serious walls and some serious lows but we never never gave up and it all paid off #iamcountryside @iamcountryside #countrylife #farmlife #womenwhofarm #mystory #myfarmjourney #homestead #farmher #smallfarm #farmlove #buckinghamshire #smallfarmer #smallfarms #smallholding #thatsfarming #simplelifehappylife #simplepleasures #selfsufficient #selfsufficiency #iamcountryside #countryliving #happy #farmlife #farmliving

I hope the trees are right and that Spring is almost here to stay. Our fruit trees are blooming as well as the Red Buds and azaleas. It's been in the 70s for the last few days, so not much to complain about here in East Texas. Sorry for you Northern folks still dealing with snow. Don't worry though, I'll want to trade places when it's in the hundreds come May😜 So, I'm not a huge fan of vague instagramming, but I do have some really good things in the works right now that I really look forward to sharing. Maybe it's just spring, and all the new life and growth, but things are really looking good here at the farm! What's everyone got going on today? Mark is working on chicken tractors. I met with another fellow Instagram. Homesteader @foxandbearhomestead and had a really great afternoon. . I'm hoping to get some pictures of the adorable chicks that hatched over the last two days so I can share those with you this coming week. I have another three dozen eggs that are going to go in the incubator. My Olive Eggers are really picking up the pace as well as the marans. . We are getting closer, and closer to being able to offer chicks and hatching eggs. I'm really big on growing at a pace that's manageable and sustainable. So, it's taking longer than I know some people would like, or that even I like, but I think long term it is going to be great and very exciting! . Well, I'll cut this already rambling long post short, but I hope all of y'all have great rest of the weekend. at Sky Girl Farm

#❤️myfarm theme this week is #farmtable and this is mine. It’s never pretty. It’s the center of our lives. We use it for everything!! Meals, sewing, #legos, school, gun cleaning, meals, table top yoga, and laundry. .. . Initially we used the table my family of origin used while growing up, all of us sisters used that table in our first home, so when my little sister married it was passed to her and my husband built this one. ... . Its cherry on top and pine painted white for the apron and legs, it matched the kitchen in our first home. I love my spacious and versatile table. But you have to swipe to see the amazing bench we designed to go with it!! ... . Thanks to @camoandfeathers and @the_red_barn_farm for hosting this fun hashtag with a great theme! . . . #lifehacks - those cans of compressed air are great for dusting LEGO creations that have been on display! .. . . #countryliving #iamcountryside #hobbyfarm #familytable #momlife #familyfirst #homeschool #legoalltheway #lego #childhood #familytradition #momlife #5kids #bluefamily

My vines have been in the ground for exactly 10 months today 🤩⁣ ⁣ 🌿I’ve learned a lot over the last 10 months, but I have a feeling I will learn even more in the next 10 months. We finished pruning this morning, and now the crews are shoveling out the big weeds.⁣ ⁣ 🍇Next will be mowing, then weed spray. I definitely let the weeds get away from me this past year and it’s my own fault. I’m FAR from a perfect farmer, and this is a learn-as-you-go type of job. ⁣ ⁣ 🍃I’m excited to watch my fields grow into a beautiful lush vineyard like last year. And hopefully this time next year, the vine rows will be clean of weeds, with a beneficial cover crop planted in between. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #vineyard #agriculture #womeninag #beavervinyeards #wine #myjobdependsonag #mjdoa #viticulture #farmher #thefarmer #thisiswomenswork #alittlepieceofparadise #countryliving #farmersofinstagram #womenwhofarm #iamamodernfarmer #agmorethanever #agvocate #femalefarmer #iamcountryside #farmerlifestyle #womeninwine #vineyardmanager #californiafarmsandranches #empoweringwomen #countrysidechampion #homesteadersofamerica #farming at California

Sometimes, without realizing it, the opportunity arises to take new photos and try new things. This picture is the perfect example of this. A person who has terrains near my house asked if he could leave the tractor there. Although I have never taken many photos of vehicles, I prefer landscapes and buildings, I thought the position of it and the day were great and it would be a spectacular photo. So, since the tractor was there, I went to get my camera and I took loads of photos, from various angles, basically I experimented, to mention that this type of photo is totally out of my comfort zone, but to evolve I had to leave it. This photo is the example of this, I left my comfort zone and the result is much better than I was expecting. After this small "adventure", I want to take more photos that take me out of my comfort zone, I want to evolve. And you? What's the photo you want to take? . #naturescapes #nature_captures #nature_shots #nature_featuring #countrysidewalk #countrysideliving #countrysidelife #iamcountryside #unknownspot #interiorportugal #travelphotobook #dreamspot #otherview #otherpointofview #tractor #tractors #perfectdays #outdoortones #otherperspective #farmlife at Portugal

I know it’s pigs, pigs, and more pigs right now...but just look at them! 😍 Two days old and we have a couple of adventurers today. Peaches is the BEST mom...no exaggeration. So attentive, calm, caring, nurturing. I fully trust her to know what’s best and I try not to unnecessarily intervene, I don’t separate mom + babies. Not all moms are good ones, but we need to let them be animals and do their thing. They know what to do. • We are leaving overnight tonight and I know they will all do great without me.

May and June are my first ducks- they will be a year in May. Things I have learned just this week about ducks: 1. They bury their eggs so be prepared to dig to find those treasures. Thankfully once you find the nest, you’re pretty well set as far as where to look. 2. Females will try to mate with each other. That one threw me for a loop. I stood there with my jaw dropped wondering if June was actually John and I had been wrong all this time. 3. Females quack and males don’t. So one way to determine June actually is June- is the fact that she quacks. 4. Males also have curly tales. June does not. Therefore June is still June. 5. Duck eggs are hard to crack open. The shells are almost kind of flexible. Other than that, they just look like a larger chicken egg inside and out. 6. It’s good to have friends who answer your questions - this I already knew- but thanks to @fresheggsdaily , June didn’t get renamed John this week. 😆 . . #learnsomethingneweveryday #ducktrivia #raiseducks #mayandjuneducks #duckeggsdaily #femaleducks #backyardpoultry #ducksarefun #ducksinwater #splishsplash #homestead #farmher #iloveducks #mypetchickenofficial #ducks #theysellduckstoo #silverappleyard #blackswedish #iamcountryside #tractorsupply

I love to try new things on the farm and I especially love trying out new products as well. I have been experimenting growing wheatgrass in organic soil and also on hemp mats to see which will perform better. This is just my first trial run but, so far, I'm actually shocked with the results. And seriously, does this wheatgrass make anyone else long for barefoot playing in the springtime grass or am I alone on this one?
