Our "little meatballs" are simply the cutest. First vaccines and worming has been completed. They are now eating soft dog kibble and Mama, May, is getting more time away from them. The garden is already so lush. Looking back to a similar photo of last year, there is quite a bit of difference. I planted my potatoes earlier this year and my cabbages are already quite big. I'm anticipating earlier and bigger harvests. #growyourownfood #growfoodnotlawns #grownfromseed #homegrown #homesteadgardens #homesteadersofinstagram # #gardenersofinstagram #gardening #gardentotable #thehomesteadlife #thehappygardeninglife #growsomethinggreen #growsomethinglovely #beautyinthedetails #beautyofnature #naturephotography #potagergarden #moestuin

Yesterday, one of my girls texted me and was upset that she had gained back some of the weight she had lost. Guess what though? So have I. Life happens, your body goes through changes, you try and fight off sickness, and sometimes you gain some weight back. BUT the important thing is that you never stop moving FORWARD. Starting is the hard part, starting OVER is even harder. I told her that she has created healthy habits, gotten so much stronger, and no matter what happens....we are always in it together. One day at a time. 🦄💕 at Crawford County, Michigan

I’m not going to lie, Spring has me absolutely exhausted. • • The garden has taken every ounce of energy, and at times has made me feel defeated with all the work. In the midst of weeding, mulching, and planting, my favorite moments are simple moments just like this. Where my sweet pony comes over to greet me while I’m working in the garden, and reminds me to enjoy this season, as hard as it is. • • In winter I long for spring, and with spring here I’m grateful for the period of rest that winter offered. As each season comes and goes, I’m reminded to enjoy exactly what it has to offer while I’m in it. One thing I’m grateful for this season? Getting an awesome workout every day and watching as I am building so much muscle! Arms, abs, legs, and shoulders all feel so much stronger! 💪🏻 #buildingmuscleinthegarden • • What are you grateful for in this season of life?

One of my Australorps at it again! The speckled eggs are my favorite! I really hate eating them because they are so pretty. I can’t wait to see what the 14 new layers will lay when it’s time. T minus 2-3 months until they start laying. It still is my favorite collecting eggs everyday. It’s a new surprise to see what is in the nesting box. I have a broody girl that will only sit on the eggs for a day or two. I always cross my fingers that she will stay on and hatch them because who doesn’t want more babies. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Which one of your layers produces your favorite egg? • • • • • • • • • • • • #backyardchickens #speckledegg #australorp #australorpegg #chickenfarmer #egglayer #homesteadinglife #homesteadersofinstagram #homesteading #homesteadersofamerica #theporterhomestead #upstatenyhomestead

I love watching these gentle giants interact with kids—especially Finnegan. He fully understands how important these children are so he takes extra care to be slow and cautious with them. Even when my seven year old rides him, he approaches slowly to the mounting block and greets Anthony with a little nudge. And, of course, it’s equally imperative to teach our kids to be aware and careful around the horses. Here Tom is practicing his “plate hand” to give Finnegan a treat; a fully flattened and opened palm to keep fingers safe.

#throwbackthursday Last year this time we had ripe strawberries. They are still green but so far are looking good. Now we need some sun and warm days. This (pop)corn didn’t pollinate fully but the few kernels it produced are huge! Can anyone tell me the correct time to harvest corn? Am I suppose to wait until the whole plant has died off or just once the cobs tassels have browned?

“These publications aren’t usually my thing...OOOH, THAT’S COOL!” ⠀ ⠀ But seriously, let’s talk crazy “Doomsdayers” for a sec... They’re not *entirely* wrong, ya know?⠀ ⠀ It’s kinda crazy to me that as a society, mothers in particular, are so wound up about having every gadget and gizmo to make their lives easier... ...except the things that could end up saving our lives.⠀ ⠀ I mean, I’m not so much a Doomsday Prepper myself, but I’m not gonna be *entirely* surprised should a zombie outbreak occur and society as we know it collapses...🤷🏾‍♀️ In all seriousness though, I think it’s a good idea in general to be as prepared and self-sufficient as possible.⠀ ⠀ Hence, the farm. And all the talk of solar powered this and that. And even the mentions of water storage peppered in.⠀ ⠀ Example:⠀ ⠀ If you’re in the PNW and haven’t heard about the Cascadia earthquake, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?! If you’ve heard of it and aren’t at all concerned about it...well, may the odds be ever in your favor.⠀ ⠀ For everyone else on the west coast, some things to think about include (in the comments if you’re interested👇🏾) :

It was a long effing day of work, but even after 15 hours (six of just driving 😭), I knew a quick workout and stretching would make me feel better. Fifteen minutes of HIIT to fire up the muscles, fifteen minutes of stretching and foam rolling....and I’m so ready for bed. Some days you will have more time than others, but you will always have time to do SOMETHING for you. Even if it’s just five minutes, carve out some time to do what you love. I promise you’ll feel better for it. 🦄💕 at Mackinaw City, Michigan

My favorite spot in our old garden. Elderberries above, chamomile and anise hyssop in the middle, and a carpet of clover below. An odd patch of dill pokes through the clover here and there. at Good Hope, Georgia

Dreaming of summer crops 🍅😍⠀ .⠀ We’ve had unseasonably cool temps (and crazy wind) and our tomato plants and peppers... oh wait and basically no other plants are even in the ground yet 😩😓. In fact nothing is even hardening off well bc soil temp is affecting nutrient uptake. ⠀ .⠀ I’m trying not to let it get me down but brrr it’s cold and I want nothing more than to be in the sunshine! ⠀ .⠀ So until crops are growing, I’ll just be here looking at images from last year to keep my hopes up! #justourbackyard #gardening #homesteadersofinstagram #happyhomesteading #homesteadlife #growyourownfood #aquietlife #simpleliving #modernhomesteading #freerange #farmstead #farmher #selfsufficient #backtobasics #wildandfreechildren #kidsinthegarden #foodie #vegetablegarden

This week has been really long. Five 12 hour days working on our first big house fix up as homeowners. But it doesn't mean I couldn't also get started on hardening off some plants. . Planting out every season is one of my favourite times of year. This year hasn't felt the same with the stress and work, but the garden still brings me peace and happiness even through the long days. . It also makes me happy knowing others find the same joy that I do from helping bring new life every year. . Cheers to gardening. . . #gardening #vegetablegardening #growyourownfood #growsomething #happyplace #homeowners #homesteadinglife #diy #homesteadersofinstagram #homestead #homesteading #dorkylittlehomestead at Braeside, Ontario

#tbt to before we moved onto our land. We bought 8 acres fully forested, so we threw up a few hammocks and used it as our private park until we bought a camper and cleared some living space. Our small piece of paradise.

This year we worked with four different schools to hatch our eggs and educate their students. Many many gawky teenage chicks returned to our farm. Around that same time we had two broody hens hatch two clutches of peepers. While the hatch timing wasn’t intentional (but hello #chickenmath ) it is our hope that these mama hens will teach the school’s chicks how to be proper chickens: scratching, dust bathing, roosting, being weary of predators on the ground and in the sky. So far so good! These mamas have their work cut out for them with 47 babies scurrying around, and they have many bodies to keep warm in the dog pile they sleep in at night. 🐣🐥 at Yarrow Ecovillage

We homestead because chose to own what we do. If we want healthier, fresher foods, we grow and raise it. . If we want farm fresh eggs, we raise chickens, ducks, and other poultry. . If we want food without preservatives, we preserve the harvest using various methods. . If we want foods that are GMO free, we work with local farmers or grow it ourselves. . If we want to keep our food source in America, our state, our county, we shop local. We not only predict our future, we create it. And so can you. Amen. . #sustainableliving #farmstead #homesteadersofinstagram #homesteadersofamerica #farmgirl #gardening #preservingfood #shoplocal #chickensofinstagram #backyardpoultry #farming

Make me coffee and tell me I’m pretty.😘. . This has been the deal for as long as I can remember. Thank the Lord for caffeine and good men! . Marriages are strengthened in the moments in between. Weddings are wonderful and babies so exciting! But mishandled bills, and poor communication, fear, and withholding trap you in a small existence as a family. . We have had seasons where we were desperate for breakthrough and God showed up when we were willing to be vulnerable with one another. Consistently showed up in this posture of humility. . I mean...open up your guts on the table and lay all that ish bare kind of vulnerable. Weep as you spit out the secrets and lies that have created distance between you and the one whom you love kind of humility. . In these totally exposed seasons, instead of rejection, we found intimacy. . Fear is not from the Father. His love DRIVES OUT fear! Marriage, unity, these are good gifts from the Lord and He loves to lavish them on His people. None of it surprised Him any ways. . If you’ve been looking for a breakthrough in your marriage, go deep. Get honest. Ask the Lord to go ahead of you. He will restore and make a way where the thorns and weeds have overgrown. . I’m trying to make a natural cough syrup this year. With pine and spruce tips as well as sage and ribwort plantain... and sugar! I really hope this works. It would be so wonderful not to have to give an over the counter medication to my toddler this coming winter! 🌱Recipe by Anna from my new favorite Insta account: @banannasmooth 💚 Layer tips and herbs and sugar in a big glass jar with a ratio of 1:2 (twice as much sugar as herbs/tips) and let it sit in the sun for 2 weeks until the sugar has absorbed the juices from the plants. Filter and store in a cold and dry place. Seven years ago I coached a group of kids who advanced to World International Robotics Competition. I knew I wasn't capable of coaching a robotics team. But I also knew God was calling me to do it. Not unlike our move from suburbia to our homestead. We had no idea the things we would have to do. But I also had no idea of the blessings that were coming. Like fresh, raw milk. Amazing. . . The robotics thing? I still have zero idea how to program a robot... I'm way too right brain-ed. (True story.) But coaching that team was one of the most rewarding things I've done. There are a lot of hard days on a homestead too, y’all. The hard days drive me to sink down deep in the fact that God called me to do this thing and surely He will bless my flawed efforts. . . What is that thing in your life today that you are incapable of doing? Do you need to be a jar of clay to be used in mundane ways that get zero recognition, in difficult ways that make you sob, or in long-haul ways that require a half a decade before there is recognition or joy or fresh, raw milk? . . Jars of clay are fragile. Common. Imperfect. But when we admit we are fragile, common & imperfect, those places become landmarks. Places in our life that stand up like definitive road signs, pointing to God's amazing goodness. Landmarks that cannot be denied. Landmarks that we can tell others about. Landmarks that give us authority to say, "God is good. Look what He did with my imperfection." . . Those landmarks are soaked in joy for one reason only... not because WE accomplished something, but because it is obvious that we could never have done this. That’s a 4:7 Attitude (2 Corinthians 4:7). An attitude that says, I am thankful I couldn't {fill in your impossible thing, like "coach a robotics team"}, because look what God did, and He asked me to be a part of {fill in your milestone that you one day accomplish, like "an international robotics competition."}! Folks, "we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us." Now that is true joy. #simplejoysrequirehardwork #homesteadersofinstagram #homesteadinglife #freshmilk #rawmilk #jarsofclay
