Chapter 1: Trying to Fix All Their Problems
I was driving home after dark, snow covered the sidewalks, and the parking lot I drove through was unlit.
A woman struggled with a grocery cart over the snow, behind her walked her daughter, a girl of 12 or 13. As I drove past I noticed a man pull up his hood and begin to follow them, staying in the shadows. "I don't like that." I think, but continued driving until the Spirit of the Lord spoke clearly to me. "Turn around right now and pick them up. Drive them and their groceries home." I didn't hesitate, and I was blessed with enough space to make a U-turn without any awkwardness.
The woman was physically revealed when I offered the ride and her eyes filled with tears. "Yes please!" The hooded man was no where to be seen as we loaded up the groceries. But he resurfaced from an alcove a part from the parking lot as I drove away, looking around as if trying to find them.
I breathed a sigh of relief. Clearly, these women were avoiding someone with sinister intentions.
As I drove them to their house, surprisingly not far from my own, the woman shared with me some recent hardships. My heart was broken open for her and her sweet, joyful daughter.
When I pulled into her driveway I laid hands on them and prayed for protection, provision, and the Lord's presence to increase in their lives.
This is where things should have ended. I just finished what the Lord had asked of me.
But this is the moment I decided to go above and beyond - thinking I know more about how to love on these people than my mighty God.
Despite not having hardly any money myself, I emptied the cash from my wallet and handed it to her. That alone would have been fine, I think, if I had not continued on with my Hero Complex... "Let me give you my number," I said, pulling out my phone, "If you need a ride, I am only a few blocks from here. I would be happy to help you out." Everything went downhill from there. Over the next few days...well...we can talk about that fiasco in the following chapters... #ministry #enabling #hopeofman #lovingothers #lovingwisely #wisdom #christianliving #believers #jesussaves #holyspirit
