Twenty years ago, Ellsworth Kelly (age 75), two exhibitions @harvardartmuseums 'ELLSWORTH KELLY: THE EARLY DRAWINGS, 1948-1955'' at the Arthur M. Sackler Museum / 'LINE FORM COLOR'' at the Fogg Art Museum / “The main event by far, though, is in Cambridge, Mass., where Harvard University has put together a survey of more than 200 works on paper that this artist produced between 1948 and 1955. Organized by the art historian Yves-Alain Bois and spread over two campus sites, the show is a knockout from beginning to end.” “The pace of experimentation quickly picked up. And at the Sackler, with pieces hung close together, everything seems to vibrate with intellectual excitement. One can feel the exhilaration of leaps being made as an artist shakes up his ways of looking and thinking, then shakes them up again.” / “In 1951 Mr. Kelly catalogued certain formal elements of abstraction into a sequence of drawings and collages that he hoped to produce as a book without text titled ''Line Form Color.'' “The 40 pieces, which were included in Mr. Kelly's 1996 Guggenheim retrospective and which he originally conceived as proposals for architecturally scaled work, are on display at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard. And in their progression from a stark image of a single black ink on a white field to geometric forms in bright, uninflected colors, they distill the blend of austerity, sensuality and audacious humor that runs through this artist's work.” - excerpts from the great Holland Cotter’s NYT Art Review “Following the Paper Trail: Ellsworth Kelly's Adventure”, April 30, 1999 #ellsworthkelly #jackshear #yvealainbois #harrycooper #hollandcotter #foggmuseum #sacklermuseum @yvealainbois @harryallancooper @harvardartmuseums @ellsworthkellystudio at Harvard University

“Sometimes the coexistence of styles can be startling. Southwestern Arabia was isolated from Rome by desert, but as the source of an international spice and incense trade, was commercially bound to it. Possibly it was this positioning — intimate but arm’s-length — that encouraged Arabia to import foreign styles.” -Holland Cotter in @nytimes These two carved goddess heads, both from Petra both from around the 1st century AD, on display at “The World Between Empires: Art and Identity in Ancient Middle East” at the Met in New York, demonstrate this import. One, fine-featured and ivy-crowned, is textbook Classical. The other, identified by inscription as a native Nabatean deity, is a flat, foursquare limestone upright with what look like stuck-on lips and eyes. . . #postgraduatediplomainasianart #postgraduate #antiquities #classicalsculpture #asianart #petra #sculpture #hollandcotter @nytimes @metropolitanmuseum at Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art - SOAS

Of Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg, William Faulkner wrote “there is always the instant when it’s still not yet two o’clock on that July afternoon in 1863 ... and it’s all in the balance, it hasn’t happened yet, it hasn’t even begun yet, it not only hadn’t begun yet but there is still time for it not to begin.” With the Atlanta History Center’s spectacular restoration of the world’s largest painting, The Battle of Atlanta is already happening, has happened, and will continue to happen. In the room where it hangs it will always be 4:45 on Friday afternoon, July 22, 1864. This artifact of memory, myth and money asks us to consider the truths and the fictions of what we call history. Thank you, @atlantahistorycenter . Thank you @howardpousner for the invitation. Opens tomorrow! #WilliamFaulkner #IntruderintheDust #AtlantaHistoryCenter #Cyclorama #HollandCotter #NewYorkTimes at Atlanta History Center

Lucio Fontana (Argentinian-Italian, 1899–1968) Spatial Concept, The Bread (Concetto Spaziale, Il Pane) 1950 • Trained as a sculptor, Fontana rejected the physical and theoretical limits of Art by considering art works concepts of space, often using gestures that created holes and cuts on a surface to reveal unseen spatial regions. "He made abstraction look dangerous." —New York Times (@nytimes - #hollandcotter) thanks & #Repost @elevenhundredart ・・・
