Sadako // A thousand paper cranes.
“Hey Mizuki. Don’t run.” Her mom yelled as she picked out the folded paper cranes from her bag. She had managed to fold five of them last night while Mizuki was sleeping. “Mama can I have one?” Mizuki wanted the cranes for herself, it reminded her of her baa-baa, Her mother’s dad who had passed away last year, Mizuki still missed his stories. She missed falling asleep in his lap. She missed the paper cranes he made for her. Her baa-baa would often spend hours a day, delicately making paper cranes. Red, Green, White. He’d at times give one to Mizuki, but the rest he kept in his cupboard. He had hundreds of cranes in there. Mizuki would often wonder what he was going to do with all those cranes, but when she asked, He’d fall silent and she could glimpse baa-baa’s eyes watering and she’d not ask anything further.
"Mizuki?” Her mom shook her out of those memories. “Do you want to place these under the statue?” She had seen the other kids doing it, the cranes amounted to thousands. She wanted to be a part of it too. But she didn’t know why they were doing it. “Mama, why are we leaving the cranes here? Can’t we take them home?”. Her mother, smiled. She walked to Mizuki and picked her up. “Do you know who’s statue this is?, This is Sadako, she used to be in your baa-baa’s school. Sadako was your grandfather’s friend. And he used to make paper cranes for her so she could get better” Mizuki knew Sadako’s story, her teacher had told it in class the other day. The girl who wished to live. But she never knew that she was her baa-baa’s friend.
She took the cranes from her mom’s hands, and placed them in the corner as if it was a flock flying towards the the large groups of cranes to join them. She placed the last crane and stood back. She watched as her cranes with hundred others flocked in a sudden gust of wind, as they uncovered the words at the base, ‘This is our cry, this is our prayer: peace in the world’. She looked up, and overhead, she saw a pigeon fly down and perch on the large metal crane in Sadako’s outstretched arms.
