Go Barefoot Often
Your feet are not separate body parts that you take off and on like your shoes. I think because our feet are often covered we may not think of them as being as important as our hands. However, we can’t get around without them. Shoes? Yes. Feet? No. Our feet are the most important shoes we will ever own! They are the foundation for EVERY movement we make (when we are upright) ... they are designed to load, support and control the mass and momentum of our bodies as we move, NOT our shoes.
Shoes jack up our ability to move well, they weaken our arches and dampen the sensory nerves in our feet (foot to ground & foot to brain connection). This is analoguous to wearing earplugs...you can’t hear as well...wearing shoes, you can’t feel/sense your envirnoment or your movement as well.
A life time in shoes squeeze the soft tissue structures inside the foot space/container, changing their shape and creating instability in the overlying body. Instead of our feet functioning like human feet, they’re more block-like; stiff, weak, tender and often painful. Plus, they develop weird things like bunion’s, neuromas, plantar fasciitis, collapsed arches, rouge toes, etc.
One way to wake up your feet, literally, and to develop stronger foot intrinsics, well-sprung arches and a stronger foundation, is to practice going barefoot. Expose your feet to different surfaces to improve your foot sense and to train the connective tissue/structures to adapt to varying loads. Use natural or artificial surfaces, a rock garden or even place grains or beans in your shoes. Not joking.🤡
Feet that function well have ninja sense...they are grounded, mobile, adaptable and strong from the inside-out! There are NO shoes that will do that for you!! Bulletproof your feet by going barefoot often, improve their function and you will improve the function and performance of the rest of your body. If you take advantage of the amazing capacity of your feet you will be surprised (with time and habit) how much stronger, powerful and more grounded you feel with each step! Move better, Feel better, Perform better!
