Why “stop thinking about it” doesn’t work?
Have you ever thought in this way?👇🏻
- I need to stop complaining
- I need to stop getting mad so easily - I need to stop being lazy
- and blah blah blah
By doing so,
you are actually helping your brain
to guide yourself back to those ‘bad’ habits again
As you are trying to suppress your thought,
1. you are intentionally searching for thoughts that can serve as distractors
2. you are unconsciously detecting failures of mental control ,
The more you suppress yourself from unwanted thoughts,
the more accessible these thoughts are in your mind
So, there’s was study asking you to write a day in life of a person (with a photo of skinhead🤬)
👩🏼🔬: please try to avoid stereotypic thoughts
So you try to suppress any stereotypic thoughts and write the story📝
After that,👩🏼🔬: please write a day in life of another person (with a photo of skinhead🤬)
Without any instruction to suppress your thought, you actually showed more stereotypicality in your story by 25%.
Personally, what I will do is 👉🏻 extending/reframing those unwanted thoughts
e.g. I am so weak at the gym
But it’s okay. No one can squat 100kg for their first time with good form. It takes time for the rock to become the rock.
You now know you are weak. Recognise your weaknesses and target it. Practice. Push yourself harder.
“Harder” means it is 100% definitely going to be hard. But you choose it. So 𝗱𝗼 👏🏻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 👏🏻𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 👏🏻.
