A new law is making it easier to change your gender in @NYCgov. NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio recently signed a bill that adds a third option of “X” for birth certificates in the city. This move also removes the requirement of a doctor’s note to change gender on a birth certificate. The law, introduced by @speakercoreyjohnson, says when listing gender, a person or the parents of a child simply need to state that they are not changing their gender for any fraudulent purpose.
@nycmayor said of the new law, “If you’re denied the right to express yourself, you don’t have freedom. If you have to sit by the door of a classroom worried that someone is going to typify you the wrong way and deny your identity, you don’t have freedom. You don’t feel free.” Along with the law comes changes to the free government issued IDNYC that will allow residents to add “X” as their gender on the ID. The card is available to all residents and has a great feature too—you can link your account to registration records at all NYC Health and Hospital facilities. Now you can identify as your truest self and be sure all your medical records go where you go.
Oh, and you can get free one-year memberships to museums and concert halls…. some pretty great ideas!
NYC is making sure that everyone has the right to be their happiest and healthiest selves regardless of gender or documented status. Just the way it should be.
