This 40-foot wide mansion (97 Clark Street, via @brooklynhistory) was known as the Ford Mansion, as it was once the home of Gordon L. Ford and later his son, Paul Leicester Ford. Gordon was the business manager for the New York Tribune and had a hand in banking and railroad interests. Paul was a journalist, writer, and noted bibliographer of Revolutionary War America. (Another son, Worthington, was chief of the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress.) Paul was killed in a murder suicide enacted by a third brother, Malcolm, in 1902.⠀ .⠀ In the 1960s, as this and other nearby buildings were being prepped for demolition as part of the urban renewal plans, preservationists saved the home's railing in hopes of reusing them for the restoration of another historic Heights house, the Peter Cornell home. That house was demolished as well and the railing is now in the Sculpture Garden at the Brooklyn Museum, among other architectural artifacts.⠀ .⠀ The early 1970s building that replaced the demolished Ford Mansion is the massive Cadman Towers, a 421-unit, almost Brutalist, co-op building (given the address 101 Clark Street). ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ 📸: John D. Ford Mansion- Morristown, NJ...Built by Jacob Ford in the 1770s. He was a iron manufacturer who also served in the militia during the Revolutionary War. He passed away in 1777. His widow, Theodosia Ford agreed to allow George Washington to use the mansion as his headquarters. During the winter of 1779 to 1780 George and Martha Washington, his assistants and servants, and guards resided here. It is still furnished as it would have been in the 1700s, with guided tours available. The Ford Mansion makes for a great day trip for any history lover! www.facebook.com/adventureswithrae #newjersey #morristownnj #fordmansion #georgewashington #njhistory #njtravel #gardenstate #revolutionarywar #historylover #history #historicalplaces #travelblogger

Today's #thenandnow features the grand entryway of the Ford Mansion. Before the home was transferred to the National Park Service, in 1933, it was owned and operated by the Washington Association of New Jersey and the house served both to memorialize its Revolutionary War past but also to store and display historic artifacts. This image depicts the exhibits as they appeared at the time of the transfer. 📸 Claire Du Laney ▪️ #fordmansion #historichouse #wanj #firsthistoricalpark #findyourpark #washingtonslepthere #nps101 #thenandnow #morristownnhp #encuentratuparque

July 31, 1873: "The property was at once struck off to the four gentlemen, who paid then, or soon after, thirty per cent of the purchase-money, and deeds were executed to them dated July 31, 1873, for the house and lot on which it stood, being about 253 feet front, and about 545 feet deep, and containing a little over three acres." And that is how the Ford mansion came to be in the hands of the Washington Association of New Jersey's forefathers - and four fathers! ▪️ (Source: History of the Washington Association of NJ, by Edmund Halsey, 1891.) ▪️ #fordmansion #morristownnj #newjeresy #washingtonassociation #nps101 #encuentratuparque #findyourpark #otd

Today we go behind the scenes to explore an exciting accessibility project underway. Historic structures pose some accessibility issues as they aren't commonly fitted with modern accommodations. To help expand our reach and give more audiences a glimpse inside the space, photographer Xiomaro worked to capture the Ford Mansion for a forthcoming park photo book. This detailed look inside the Ford Mansion rooms will complement our current Google Cultural Institute virtual tour. ▪️Other park sites Xio has worked with include @weirfarmnhs, @fireislandnps, @sagamorehillnhs to name a few. ▪️Check out his work at xiomaro.com▪️ #findyourpark #xiomaro #portraitofanartist #artistspotlight #behindthescenes #nps101 #fordmansion #morristownnhp #museumlife #historichousemuseum #googleculturalinstitute @googleartsculture #encuentratuparque

🍷General Washington would have been pleased with the discovery of two hundred year old Madeira at the Liberty Hall Museum in Union, NJ. Madeira was usually his drink of choice--and he received a large quantity of it at the Ford Mansion. In a letter from Headquarters, Morristown on May 13, 1780 the General thanked Francis Lewis (a member of the Board of Admiralty) for the gift of the Continental Congress of two pipes of Madeira, probably from a captured vessel. A pipe is a cask with an estimated size of 126 gallons of wine. (see Mount Vernon encyclopedia entry on Madeira, cited below) But, alas, there is no remainder of it today at the Ford Mansion. ▪️ From George Washington to Francis Lewis, 13 May 1780 http://founders.archives.gov/documents/Washington/99-01-02-01729 ▪️ For more information on Washington and Madeira, see http://www.mountvernon.org/digital-encyclopedia/article/madeira/ ▪️ 📸 http://www.nj.com/union/index.ssf/2017/07/liberty_hall_museum_discovers_wine_collection_from.html ▪️ #findyourpark #playonjuly #nps101 #georgewashington #encuentratuparque #wine #madeira #madeiramonday #mountvernon #newjersey #fordmansion

Local Artist Spotlight! New Jersey native Stephanie Gamba captures the hidden histories of the many Morristown NHP locations through this ten photo gallery. Swipe left to view all. When asked about her artistic explorations, she said, "When people think of New Jersey, it is either images over looking the city, the shore lines or, sadly, factories. Even though I am a New Jersey native, I find that most people, including myself for a very long time, did not look into our own history and our state's natural beauty when looking for things to do. Over the last couple of years, I have opted to try to find the beauty in my own state as much as possible. Through my images, I hope to show that there is so much history in our state and bring more people to see what they can experience in their own backyard." Intern Meghan Kolbusch continues our #muesumweek tribute with look at some Ford Mansion goodies! The Continental Army knew how to travel in style! Since Morristown was a temporary Headquarters (1779/1780), we wanted to feature artifacts depicting life on the go. 💻The laptop desk ( #moveoverbillgates) was used for writing correspondence on the go. 🐎Saddlebags and 💼trunks were the most common kind of suitcase. 💧Notice the fringe on the large manuscript trunk, used to wick water away. 📦The larger, wooden trunk is believed to have been owned and used by George Washington himself. 💰Strong boxes were used to hold valuables. 🥃 And the dutch liquor cabinet kept them relaxed. 🛏An aide-de-camp's bed could be dissembled, tied together, and then set up wherever the army moved to next. 📜Everything from maps to ink to tobacco had its own carrying case to ensure its safety. Bon voyage! #travelsMW #americanrevolution #travelinstyle #findyourpark #armylife #nps101 #🇺🇸 #encuentratuparque #washington #fordmansion #morristown

Who's #hungry?: #thewomenofMORR🔥🥘 Tempe Wick, the daughter of the Henry Wick who hosted Major General Arthur St. Clair during the winter encampment, would have used a kitchen #fire just like this. 🍽In the 18th century, meats would have been cooked inside a reflective oven, placed at the bottom right. The second photo depicts Theodosia Ford's kitchen. She shared her space with Washington's camp cooks. ⛺️Our museum tech uses artificial #food to recreate the moment without endangering the artifacts ! #morristown #cooking #🔥 #masterchef #foodmw #museumweek #WickHouse #FordMansion
