Lycoperdon perlatum, Gem-Studded Puffball. Puffballs were actually this first mushroom I learned to identify many years ago when I used to hike around the mountains of New Mexico in the fall. The mushrooms in these pictures were mostly found near Evergreen State College and Priest Point park near Olympia, WA. Puffballs are a pretty easy beginner mushroom because there’s not a lot that look quite like them. Although some Amanita mushrooms can look a little similar when young, there is an easy way to tell the two apart. The Amanita mushrooms will have a volva or a kind of cupped egg-like structure underground that they emerged from. So when in doubt, just poke your finger into the ground and unearth the mushroom to see if the stem connects straight to the soil, or if it has a volva. Puffballs are edible, although not my personal favorite. The thing to make sure of is that the puffball is COMPLETELY white throughout when you cut it in half. Once it’s starts maturing, the inside will turn yellow, then olive colored, and finally brown and powdery. Only eat the fully white mushrooms. If they are fully mature and powdery inside, give the puffball a little jab, poke, or squeeze and see how they got their name! These things puff out tons of spores and it’s extremely satisfying to poke them 😄 Puffballs can grow in a wide range of environments, from grassy parks and yards, to gravelly trails, to duff and humus in forests. They are quite common and tend to grow in clusters. #puffball #mushrooms #fungi #fungus #shroomstagram #mycology #ediblemushrooms #medicinalmushrooms #naturalfood #foraging #naturalmedicine #forestfood #mushroomsociety #youfungus #spores #fungi_fan_club #mushlove #mushroomhunting #🍄 #nature #mushroomseason #dopefungi #mushroomidentification #education #fungifreaks #fungusamongus #shrooms at Olympia, Washington

We (i) have some 'peculiar' things & I guess some would deem this recent Roe Deer hide one of them. I don't quite have the time or space to peg & scrape, so opted for a good finger pull of skin layers to remove as much fat & meat as possible & then gave the hide a very liberal sprinkling of that horrible Saxa table salt - about all its worthwhile for. Next step, fold, bag & leave for a short while & consult @wildawakeireland for nuggets of her excellent hide tanning skills info (I couldn't just throw this one Lucy & it's a cracker, from a 19kg Roe Deer, thick & soft). Thanks to Max @bistrofortysix for shooting the deer for me. #foraging #wildfood #tanning #deerhide

⛅Suns out / Forage out 🌿 . . Can it be classed as #foraging if it comes from your garden? After a hefty covering of seaweed I left the beds to do their thing for the winter and was rewarded with a glut of #ThreeCorneredLeek. Half of the beds have been left to flower, half of them now reside in my kitchen - recipes needed! at Falmouth, Cornwall

incredible evening at @buckandbirch’s after burns supper - ate oysters the size of my heid, devoured a year’s worth of mushrooms in one sitting, drank vermouth made from unwanted christmas trees and enjoyed various other delights created from foraged local produce from sea, field and hedgerow. can’t stop thinking about that venison trifle. #foraging #scottishproduce #edinburgh at Dalriada. 🔅So, how does spruce salt taste like? A few days back, we had a post about a herbal salt made from sea salt and spruce needles Many of you probably wondered how it tastes. We did too. So today we made some lamb roasts on the barbecue. We approached it the scientific way; we also made some conventional ones flavored with rosemary to compare with. It actually tastes great! It was a very mild and pleasant taste despite the smell was a bit harsh. So next time, we will adjust the ratio of salt: spruce needles in favor of the needles. 🍽 🍽 🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽 #spruce #wildfood #herbalsalt #seasalt #gathering #scavenging #foraging #livingintheforest #eatingwild #lambroast #homemadespices #diy #newflavors #livingoftheland #tryingnewthings 🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽 🍽 🍽 at Gösköp, Kronobergs Län, Sweden

Now, I’m not an experienced forager by any means, but I know garlic when I smell garlic! Don’t get excited, it’s nowhere near wild garlic season yet - this isn’t wild garlic! This just so happens to be “Crow Garlic” or “Wild Chives”. ⁣ ⁣ I brushed past them while picking up a stick to throw for the dog on todays morning walk and the smell was unmistakable! Like a beautiful fresh kick of allium to the nostrils! ⁣ ⁣ I was too excited to even run home and get a trowel, so I used the dogs stick to gently lever this bunch out of the ground. The entire plant is edible, and I’ve got plans for every last millimetre! Stay tuned to see how I used them! (It goes without saying that you should do your research before picking and eating any plants, so be careful out there ok??) at Hastings, East Sussex

This punchy flavourful herb is back! Another sign of the season and soil warming up! ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Wild garlic is one of the best herbs to really uplift any dish and awaken those taste buds! (Also Sorrel too!) ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ It's really easy to work with - added to oil to infuse, blended with homemade pesto and hummus and chopped up as an extra addition with slightly cooler foods like a zesty spring salad! ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ I have a secret little spot which is my 'go to' every year, usually amongst a carpet of vibrant bluebells! ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Do you have a special place to gather wild garlic? And if so how do you use this punchy plant? ⁣⁣⁣🌱

SPRING . . . I spent my afternoon in the garden inspecting my herbs and lavender plants. . Delighted to see the first signs of spring peeking through on such a glorious sunny day. . I have picked out some thyme, creeping rosemary, sage and a mix of English and French lavender for drying to use in the house. . Tomorrow I'm off to start ticking off the list of herbs, fruit and veg plants that I'm working on this year. . Growing an edible and useful garden is time consuming and extremely hit and miss. I've had to learn on the job and teach myself a lot of things... Usually the hard way but finally after 5 years the investments are starting to pay off. . Not aiming for self sufficiency but lessening the bills is great, I mainly do it for the shear love of tending to them and watching the growth. . . . #gardening #herbs #horticulture #lovethesmells #foraging #headspace #reapingandsowing #sowingandreaping #circleoflife

Side-by-side of the pitted laurel cherries from previous post, and their pits. See how much bigger the pits are compared to cherries we buy at the store? It’s a pain to get the skin and pulp off those pits, too. Every year I tell myself, “I’m not doing this again,” and every summer those cherries pull me right back in. #forage #foraging #wildcraft #wildcrafting #cherry #cherries #whydoidothistomyself
