Today is Mindful Eating Day, which was created by The Center for Mindful Eating to counter the harmful messaging and ideals diet-culture promotes. This year, the theme is Stepping into Mindful Eating, and we'll discuss mindful eating as a practice to allow yourself to be present, aware, and compassionate when engaging and interacting with activities surrounding food and eating. I'll be part of the conversation as a speaker along with several mindfulness practitioners and pioneers in mindful eating: Jan Chozen Bays, Megrette Fletcher, @jennahollenstein, @dinavitantonio, Fiona Sutherland, Lynn Rossy, @straightforward_nutrition, and Char Wilkins. ..... Happy Mindful Eating Day continued. A delicious one could be to be mindful about the taste, smell and texture of food. This can happen from the moment you start to prepare a meal, to it sitting on your fork. What does it look like? Can you hear it? What does it smell like? Does it change flavours as you chew it? What was in that mouthful that you'd like to combine together again? Before you dish up your plate check-in with how hungry you are. This can help with portion sizes to enjoy quality, not quantity. When more food is served, we are tempted to eat more! Go back for more after that 20 minutes if you need more. Did you know that just by seeing or smelling food may trigger cues to eat... but are you actually hungry or does it just smell good? Grab yourself a smaller plate or bowl. We tend to use the available space given and psychologically a 'normal' portion can seem like you've not eaten much if the vessel is too big and the plate could have been full. Check-in with your stress levels. You may find yourself responding to stress by eating, even when you're not hungry. Perhaps, notice if this is a habit you have. If you do, then try and not judge yourself but acknowledge it. Maybe next time, go for a walk, take some deep breaths or share your feelings with someone else. Getting something off your mind is a great way to feel supported and a feel like a mini moment of caring therapy. My personal favourite....Appreciate food. Acknowledge the gift of food and the effort needed to grow, harvest and prepare it. Enjoy your food with gratitude and a smile. A lot of the time the dialogue in my head when it comes to deciding what to eat is exhausting-still. Especially when I’m already stressed, or tired, or anxious. Last night I kind of hungry, not starving just kind of hungry. But my brain was like wait- you didn’t move around as much at work today, you didn’t burn x amount of calories at the gym, you already ate something that could be considered sweet, you know those have x amount of calories and fat and sugar🙄, you don’t really want anything, you don’t deserve that anyway (wait, what??) Yikes. I didn’t feel like sitting with the guilt all night over these stupid cookies either. So I compromised and had 1, which isn’t necessarily great but baby steps are ok too. Wow this got long, sorry for rambling! I think I’m just trying to say not every meal and snack has to be a huge recovery win, small efforts are important too. at Brookline, Massachusetts

Happy Mindful Eating Day 2019... Today I'd like to ask everyone to put food first. Take a moment and just realise what you're eating, smell it, notice it and eat every mouthful. It's actually easier than it sounds but just in-case here's some ideas that might help... When you eat – only eat! Give eating the attention it needs to fully enjoy your food and be mindful of every bite. So.... Eat s.l.o.w.l.y. When you eat food, do you already have the next mouthful lined up before you've finished chewing the last one? Your mind is so busy focusing on the next spoon that you've missed noticing the food that's in your mouth. Try consciously putting your fork down between bites, CHEW and then pick up your fork after swallowing. By putting down your fork, your meal should last a little longer (hopefully up to 20 minutes) which gives your body time to give you hunger or satiety cues. Eating without distraction so try and have a screen free meal. More on the next picture...
