People go to extremes so as to get the body that they want, as if we could simply mold and shape it like clay. Crazy diets, shakes, surgical procedures, expensive spa treatments and cosmetics... it's a list that goes on forever and promises to solve whatever "blemish" or insecurity one might have.
Who is to blame, though? We are told since day one that it's bad and undesired to have a certain body type and good, perfect, amazing to have another. We watch parents skip meals, family members talk about diets and laugh about how someone they know has gotten old, school kids bullying one another for their weight and shape, etc. Our bodies become an object of scrutiny for as long as we can remember- and it's even normal for us to do the same.
Then it begins: the hateful self-talk. The comparison between your body and those people on ads, tv and magazines. Self-loathing so huge you can't take it anymore and start taking measures. Starving yourself, limiting calories and food groups, exercising until oblivion, getting in debt for cosmetics, the first tummy tuck.
In the meantime, we forget the true essence of this thing we harm so much: our bodies' biggest interest is to keep us alive. No matter how caring or hating we are towards it. Is there truer unconditional love? It does its best to protect us, keep ua warm and running, so why shouldn't we do the same to it?
Today, look at your body without insecurities which were distilled upon you. It's ok if you can't love t right now, but try thanking it for keeping you alive and being with you all this time.
