Today, I made the mistake of asking a colleage if Orlando gets crazy summer monsoon rain like Jax. Naturally, I’d get my answer later in the evening. I left work in what appeared to be your garden variety Florida thunderstorm⛈...but the rain was beating down on me and the entire parking lot at work was underwater, soaking my newest @lillypulitzer shift and potentially ruining my beloved gladiator sandals. Grumpy, I hopped on the 408 expecting to be home in <10 min. Of course, the rain picked up and I could not see more than a car’s length ahead of me. There were concrete construction barriers on both sides of the two-laned highway, and the road was flooded like the streets near the St. John’s in Jax - but a HIGHWAY. Then my tire pressure light came on. I was only going 35 mph, but started to fear for my life. A voice in my head told me to get off the highway one exit early and take Colonial, the slower route, but with more means of ingress and egress - I’m so glad I did. According to Waze, there were major accidents on two of the four ramps off and onto 408. One happened 25 ft away from me. I ended up stuck on an overpass looking down on 408 for over 20 minutes, within walking distance of my apartment but unable to move. It’s no fun when a 9 minute drive home takes over an hour, but seeing EMTs trying to extract a person from a destroyed car with deployed airbags really put things in perspective. I am just thankful I made it home safely. 🙏🏻 Tl;dr - follow your intuition and keep the big picture in mind.
