Do you ever make deals with yourself? This morningโ€™s run I was trying for some speed (ish) so I told myself that if I got my first mile in 8 minutes Iโ€™d turn around and just do two miles. Well it was 8 min and 26 seconds so.... I had to go another .57 miles before I could turn around. I still made my run with under a 9min/mile pace so I was pleased. Even when I mis it, I tend to do better if I have a goal and a reward in mind. My main goals now? Fitness: stronger faster. Work: be a better, more creative and clean coder and more insightful teacher, life: be a human who loves. My reward? Be forewarned of a bit of rant ahead. I had a few requests for some autographed photos and needed to get some new ones printed. I selected this photo taken by Steve Smith of @thenewmejourney last year and I ordered my prints at Walmart. Upon pickup we were informed that these should never have been printed because โ€œthis is sexually explicit in nature.โ€ When asked why it is sexual? It is just a woman in a bikini.โ€ The response was โ€œtoo much boob is showingโ€. I should point out that this was a woman who is a manager at my local Walmart. As an athlete and someone that has done a little modeling I was greatly disrespected and insulted by this. In this photo Iโ€™m simply trying to show the world that a 48 y/o grandma can still be very fit. Iโ€™m not wearing anything that I havenโ€™t literally worn on a beach in Florida. Maybe this photo is sexy, that is for you to decide individually, but even if so, sexy does not mean sexually explicit! It does not mean I am advertising myself for sex or inviting sexual advances. How is this photo any different than a Victoria Secret catalog, a Sports Illustrated magazine or any of the bodybuilding competitions going on around the world. Iโ€™ve, for the most part, been a big advocate for Walmart, and this puts a bit of damper on my enthusiasm. Words matter, words can hurt and they influence our culture and perceptions. Itโ€™s been 12 months since my hip op and I remember there was nothing but the feeling of frustration and anger from not being able to train and having to start all over again๐Ÿ˜ซ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ I couldโ€™ve made excuses... Iโ€™m too old.. 48 ๐Ÿ˜œ Iโ€™m too sore.. Iโ€™ll never be able to squat or deadlift again.. Whatโ€™s the point.. I might hurt myself... These are all negative thoughts that can sometimes take over your brain๐Ÿ˜ซ. Iโ€™m glad I did not allow this to happen. Definitely wasnโ€™t easy. 1 year on and Iโ€™m at a place I have havenโ€™t been for awhile. I am stronger! I am healthy! I can Deadlift! I can squat! (Deep!) My mindset has changed and I no longer look for flaws but accept the changes in my body! (I โ™ฅ๏ธME!) I am more confident! Woo-hoo! Today is indeed a Happy Friday. NON- SCALE VICTORY !!!!!! One of my coworkers said that "Shayon you have lost weight." She's been following me through this current 6 week challenge. She's been amazed by the changes that she sees in my body. I told her that I hadn't lost any weight only inches. I can't believe how loose these pants are to say that I have been working out for 20 minutes a day. I have ONE more week to go before I start my second round of this amazing program. And I am loving my results so far. Losing pounds in most cases doesn't really mean a lot.
