I wasn't gonna join in on this 10 year challenge malarkey, as I don't enjoy looking back pre-Uni that much. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On the left, I'm pretty lean. However, I felt fat. During my school years I was bullied, for my size, my strength and my differences (thanks PCOS). I was made to feel huge (looking back I can clearly see I wasn't, but that's no use now).. My only happy place was Army Cadets. I felt more 'me' there than I did anywhere else. I was one of the lads, and one of the girls, it was like a little family. You can visibly see the difference in a natural smile in cadet gear, vs a very uncomfortable smile with school friends.. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fast forward to 2019, we've been through uni, we've joined the working world, we've grown up a lot, put on weight, shifted some off, put more on, shifted a bit off and grown as an individual. I'm far more comfortable, and happier in my own skin. Continuing on from Monday's post on data tracking and health checks - Here we can see my weight, body fat percentage and muscle quality readings for over a year and a half, with the weight log going as far back as January 2016 in the full spreadsheet. But is this useful and necessary information to have? In short, it can be. Say you are currently overweight and want to reduce your body fat, you would likely benefit most from tracking your weight and using BMI as the measure of health assessment (more on this in a post to come). We are not looking at an individual in a weight class sport so body fat percentage isn't necessary and the muscle quality may not be either for anyone outside of strength sport but it is nice to have. What this kind of data tracking can do is set up a means to assess progress over time and keep yourself accountable to your goals. For instance - Week 1 - 75kg Week 2 - 74.7kg - 300g Week 3 - 74.6kg - 100g Week 4 - 75.1kg +500g What happened to cause week 4 to undo all of the progress so far? Without tracking this may be what happens, resulting in an unintentional weight increase over time. All too often people think 'I've been good recently so I can let loose this weekend' and before they know it, they're back at square one. While tracking it is much easier to assess whether or not a person is continually moving in the right direction. It's not always going to be a linear path to achieving any goal but if the trend moves in the right direction then you do too.
