This is the first time I work on something so ambitious in dance: choreographing a piece in the odissi style on another body. In addition the theme I’m exploring is very untraditional. Well, untraditional for Indian dance I guess! 🌼
My piece explores knitting as a practice symbolising women’s role in society, their labour, cultural expectations on their bodies, and ambivalent desires. 🌺
I’m very far from somehow translating these ideas into practice, but I feel this is just the beginning of a longer journey. 🌻
I’m presently working on fragments. One of this is called ‘the bundle’ and another is called ‘in the making’. In the first I’m looking at the analogy between the first basic thread we are linked to ( umbilical cord) and a ball of yarn, as symbol of the potential that life entails. In the second section, I’m exploring the dynamics of knitting as a metaphor of life-making itself, through more traditional odissi vocabulary, yet focusing on movements that remind me of winding-unwinding, threading, looping, circling around. I have more ideas that I will be able to put into form! 🌷
working with Pallavi is sooo inspiring. she can make any movement look super beautiful and feminine, and in the process I’m also learning so many new dynamics from her!!
Come and see this work on 5th April at Bhavan!!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 #newchoreography #rerooteddancecollective #coworking #dancescratch #rerooteddance #experimenting #knitting #dance #bundle #creating #womendancing
