“The ‘SILENT HIGHWAY’ - MAN. Your MONEY or your LIFE!” Illustration by John Leech, 1858, Punch Magazine, showing Death rowing down the Thames. The image pertains to “The Great Stink” which was an incident that occurred during July and August of 1858 in London when the summer heat cooked up the sewage and industrial waste that had piled up in the Thames River for years, producing an unbearable stench. 💩 People were concerned that diseases such as cholera could spread through the stinking air, a notion known as the “miasmatheory.” The work of Dr. John Snow during the cholera epidemic in London in 1854, just a few years earlier, had shown the connection between locations with contaminated water and higher incidences of cases, thereby indicating its waterborne nature. Snow would later be known as one of the early leaders in the field of epidemiology. #thegreatstink #riverthames #thamesriver #victorianera #oldlondon #industrialization #victorian #epidemics #epidemiology #drjohnsnow #johnsnow #cholera #miasmatheory #death #deathpositive #mortality #theboatman #reaper #grimreaper #skeleton #antiqueengraving #victorianillustration #johnleech #thesilenthighwayman #punchmagazine #victorianlondon #victorianhistory #historian #portalsoftimevintage

Watched “Perfect Sense” (David Mackenzie, 2011). It’s a science fiction movie that isn’t one. You get no special effects but current-day Glasgow in all its urban ugliness. The one sci-fi element is that the world gets hit by a pandemic where people lose their senses one at a time. Not their mind, their sensory perceptions. The human race gradually loses its sense of smell, then its taste buds and its hearing. Towards the end of the movie, the first people go blind. There have of course been several such science-based nightmare movies - “Outbreak”, “28 Days Later”, and “Contagion” to name a few - inspired by such diseases as AIDS, SARS and Ebola, but this is the most philosophical one. It asks the question: can civilisation survive such a disaster? Would the state and law and order break down? Susan (Eva Green, @evagreenweb) is one of the epidemiologists who investigates the new agent. She begins a relationship with Michael (Ewan McGregor), the chef of a restaurant without customers once people can no longer smell or taste anything. The secondary actors - Ewen Bremner (also in “Trainspotting”!), Stephen Dillane, Connie Nielsen (@cn_connienielsen) and Denis Lawson (in real life Ewan McGregor’s uncle!) - are equally good. This kind of movie scares many but I think you should watch it. Here’s why: the people who have seen it can’t agree whether it’s a bleak or ultimately a life-affirming picture... #pandemic #epidemiology #epidemic #science #sciencefiction #scifi #movie #movies #film #films #dvd #dvds #dvdcollector #dvdcollection #dvdcover #evagreen #ewanmcgregor #ewenbremner #stephendillane #denislawson #connienielsen #davidmackenzie #perfectsense #glasgow #scotland #disease #diseases #movienight #moviereview @evagreenweb @cn_connienielsen at Glasgow, United Kingdom

Measuring Trachoma in Burkina Faso #TBT: A diagnostic technician performs an eye exam in a training exercise outside of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Trachoma can lead to blindness if left untreated. However, mass drug administration (MDA) with azithromycin can help control trachoma, and in 2017 more than 84 million people at risk around the world received MDA as part of efforts to control and eventually eliminate the disease. #CDC is partnering with leading organizations to create a simpler, more cost-effective means of assessing MDA impact on trachoma. This article gets brought up a lot in conversations about the benefits of a low carbohydrate diet as opposed to a low fat diet. Even ignoring the fact that observational studies can’t tell you anything about the validity of the observed relationship between two variables OR the obvious confounders present in these sample populations, this study is SO flawed for a number of reasons. The most significant of which, in my opinion, is that energy (calorie) intake of the subjects is not controlled for at all. It is completely invalid to relate a clinical outcome to a dietary pattern if the subjects vary in their caloric intake! ESPECIALLY if this is across the bound between caloric surplus and caloric deficit. This variable alone completely changes metabolism! Additionally, the “low carbohydrate consumption” group still consumed as much as 40% of calories from carbohydrates! In what universe is that considered low?! In any event, this study sucks... and the general consensus of the scientific community is that low carbohydrate diets are the best way to mitigate risk of CVD. #thelancet #epidemiology #lowcarb #publichealth #tulanepublichealth

Malaria Epidemiology: Malaria is a global disease present in over 90 countries. In 2017, the number of global malaria cases was 219 million, resulting in 435 000 deaths. The WHO African region carries the major burden of malaria, with 92% of cases occurring in this region. Malaria is caused by the Plasmodium parasite. The parasite is transmitted to humans through the bite of the female Anopheles mosquito. The most prevalent malaria parasite in the WHO African region is the Plasmodium falciparum. 🦟 #Malaria #WHO #globalhealth #parasite #mosquito #epidemiology #malariaprevention #medicine #science #kcl #kings #london #Africa #like #instalike #throwbackthursday #health #medicine #pharmacy #science Image adapted from: https://www.who.int/gho/malaria/epidemic/cases/en/index1.html
