I went to Puglia by myself a few years ago — a wondrous, exciting, lonely trip. Because I was alone, I could move fast and dart around to anything I pleased. I went to Polignano, Lecce, Alberobello, Locorotondo, Ostuni, Otranto, and Matera (which isn’t in Puglia, but in Basilicata) all in about 10 days. I rode on tiny, rickety trains whose schedules were mere suggestions. I had some of the best food I’ve eaten not just in Italy, but in the world — orecchiette with raw sauce, the fava bean puree with chicory that’s traditional to the region, pasta with tiny clams and woody mushrooms, incredible primitivos and verdecas. I stayed in a guestroom in a townhouse that had a leafy, vine-hung garden; the owner left a basket of still-warm-from-the-oven pastries and breads at my door every morning. I sat in cafes on narrow stone streets projecting life stories onto all the other people in the cafe, the people who passed. I don’t much like to travel alone these days and I wonder if I will have another trip like that one. But I cannot look back on Puglia with anything but awe and fondness and longing.
