Desert Chia (Salvia columbariae), Joshua Tree National Park, California. The desert chia, closely related to Chia (Salvia hispanica), grows in the deserts of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Sonora and Baja California. It was used by native peoples for medicinal purposes (primarily poultices for infections, eye infections and fevers), as a food crop, and even as building materials. How cool is that? . Every day I post an original nature photograph along with some interesting facts about the subject matter. Desert Wildflowers - A LensBaby Collage A few desert wildflowers for week 15 of 52 Weeks for 2019. All were photographed with a LensBaby Velvet 56. Lately early morning is about the only time to photograph flowers outside because the wind has been blowing nearly every day making attempting macro or close up shots of these delicate beauties a challenge. Top left Tidy Tips, top right Phacelia, bottom left Gillia (I think, the flower is so tiny - about ½” or less. This could also be Fillaree but no seed pods so looking back at the photos I can’t be certain) bottom right Desert Hyacinth. Obviously I like photographing flowers from this softer point of view rather than for botanical identification so don’t hold my feet to the fire for any of the names. #desertwildflowers #wildflowers #lensbaby #lensbabylove #lensbabyvelvet56 #lensbabyvelvet #joshuatree #joshuatreecalifornia #desertflowers #desertflora #desertphotography #desertplants #highdesert #mojavedesert #superbloom2019 #happyearthday #californianativeplants #wildflowersofinstagram

As spring explodes into color throughout the Sonoran desert, I visit the San Carlos Apache land to ponder the nature of self. The Pattern of the Trestle-board has always served me as a powerful reminder of individual power within the unity with nature. “This is the Truth about Self”. 0. All the Power that ever was or will be, is here NOW. 1. I am a center of expression for the Primal Will-To-Good which eternally creates and sustains the Universe. 2. Through me its unfailing Wisdom takes form in thought and word. 3. Filled with Understanding of its perfect law, I am guided moment by moment upon the path of liberation. 4. From the exhaustless riches of its Limitless Substance, I draw all things needed, both spiritual and material. 5. I recognize the manifestation of the Undeviating Justice in all the circumstances of my life. 6. In all things, great and small, I see the Beauty of the Divine Expression. 7. Living from that Will, supported by its unfailing Wisdom and Understanding, mine is the Victorious Life. 8. I look forward with confidence to the perfect realization of the Eternal Splendor of the Limitless Light. 9. In thought and words and deed, I rest my life from day to day upon the sure Foundation of Eternal Being. 10. The Kingdom of Spirit is embodied in my flesh. #sancarlosapachereservation #sonorandesert #spring #desertwildflowers #natureofself #iamadesertwildflower #patternonthetrestleboard

Aphyllon cooperi. Desert Broomrape. In the Orobanchaceae family. This striking native has recently underwent a name change and was formerly known under the genus Orbanche. Aphyllon cooperi is a parasite that likes to get its goods from Ambrosia spp (Burweed) and Encelia farinosa (Brittlebush). Unlike most parasites, Aphyllon is quite attractive and has the most luxurious shades of purples. Parasites are like cheaters and know how to take advantage of the underground fungal network through haustoria. Haustoria is seen in both the plant and fungal kingdom and reveals convergent evolution. Native parasites aren’t invasive to ecosystems and help balance life in the desert.

Well, I enjoyed local hiking while it lasted. Today, I ventured about an hour away from home to slightly cooler weather. When I looked into this trail, it got mediocre ratings at best. But, there was nothing mediocre about it, in my opinion. I saw a variety of wildflowers and the floral scent filled the air. I listened to the peaceful sound of the creek and the birds and I never saw a single soul on the trail! Now, that’s my kind of hike! * * * * #arizona #arizonawildflowers #springinarizona #springwildflowers #desertwildflowers #springinthedesert #wildflowerseason #wildflowers #nature #naturephotography #flowersofinstagram #flowersoftheday #flowerstagram #flowerpower #instaflower #flowergram #ig_flowers #ig_arizona #mtnchicksarizona #womenwhoexplore #azadventurebabes #switchbackchics #optoutside #wildernessbadass #hikeaz #hikearizona #visitarizona #naturalarizona #arizonaisgorgeous #keepnaturewild at Tonto National Forest

Joshua Tree has some crazy cool looking trees. Today though is more than about scenery. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, 'Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree.'" That tree/cross was Jesus way of showing us just how much He loves us. (John 3:16) He held nothing back! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Then, 3 days later, He walked out of that tomb!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Happy Easter. Thank you Jesus! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ at Joshua Tree National Park

Week 13 of 52 weeks - It has been almost more than the eye can take in. The area shown is basically our backyard, located just behind our barn. I wanted to capture and record and share the sight before the flowers were gone. This Spring is being noted as “The Super Bloom” for the California desert. We are at about 3600’ elevation and the wildflowers began to pop in earnest the week of this photo. We have lived here over 40 years and have never seen the Desert Canterbury Bells in such profusion and so high up in the rocks and boulders. Even in past El Niño years or the year of “The March Miracle” it has not happened in such spectacular fashion. #desertwildflowers #desertwildflower #superbloom2019 #joshuatree #52weeks #52weeks2019 #myhome #mojavedesert #highdesert #highdesertlife #wildflowers #desertlandscape #canterburybells #californiadesert #desertphotography

We took a road trip to the Wonderful Land of Oz for our latest issue of the Messenger Mountain News. The superbloom may have peaked, but its not too late to see amazing desert wildflowers. #wildflowers #superbloom #roadtrip #desertwildflowers

Desert larkspur (Delphinium parishii). The name Delphinium is derived from the Ancient Greek word for dolphin because larkspur flowers, with the backwards facing spur of the flower, are sort of dolphin shaped (I guess.. 🐬). This long spur contains nectar to attract pollinators that are able to reach deep into the spur, such as butterflies and bumblebees.

As the wildflowers end their glorious show, the desert looks more familiar. Everything is a bit dry and brown, with the occasional pop of color. The hills are still greenish with a dusting of golden yellow. This looks like spring in the desert to me. Don’t get me wrong, I drank in the vivid colors and absurd lushness of the super bloom, but now I know where I am again. Time to get back to looking closely and discovering the hidden treasures of the desert. (This is in 29 Palms. JT and YV are still getting a lot of super bloom activity) #desert #desertspring #desertseasons #endofsuperbloom #changingdesert #gettingwarmer #springflowers🌸 #wildflowers #desertwildflowers #cactusflowers🌵🌸 #beautiful29palms #29palms #joshuatreenationalpark
