In 2009, I went on a trip to the heart of Iran, the desert. And after years of keeping these photos away in a drive, they were qualified for The Street Football Photo Project Competition in 2015.
Recently, I decided to share them with you, and this is how the story goes.. In a shop along the road, I bought a red plastic ball that resembled the ball we used to play with as a kid, mostly at my grandmother’s house in Neyshabur during the summer. An act to sooth my nostalgic cravings! My cousins and I would play different games such as the one called “vasati” - the middle one. I recall the balls coming in colors of blue and purple as well as the red.
On my way to the desert, I stopped at a small village. I noticed a bunch of kids sitting around looking all bored. Out of the car I hopped, grabbing the camera to shoot my subjects, using the red plastic ball as bait. After melting their ice with a friendly conversation and when they were ready to roll, I gave them the ball.
Photography is my passion, an adrenalin rush, keeping me interested in life and training my eyes for becoming a better storyteller and a filmmaker.
I was sadden to have to part with these kids when it was time leave, in order to reach the destination before nightfall. The kids stopped playing, a childish fear of losing the ball appeared on their faces. They hesitated to follow me to the car. I told them to keep the ball. They ran back to their “football field” cheerfully, screaming. The memory of it melts my heart even today as I go through these images, the fact that I made their day with just a plastic ball, the gesture of sharing and creating a moment, a memory.
