#ama: a topic that I got asked a lot about from ya’ll was #research and why I still do science fairs in the 19th grade. So here it goes.
“Are you in a joint PhD program?”
No, I am not. I do/did research for fun.
“What is your research on?”
I work in a craniofacial developmental genetics lab. Currently, we’re trying to test alternative treatments for mucoepidermoid carcinoma (the most common salivary gland cancer). More specifically, we are working with flavonoids to treat CMV-induced salivary gland cancer. —
“Why do you do research?”
I joined the lab 3 years ago during my gap year bc I was bored/looking to try a new outlet of learning, and decided to stick with it once I started the DDS program because why not? Nowadays it’s been really taking a toll on me physically since wet lab experiments take so much time, I find myself leaving the lab at midnight after a long day of clinic and it’s been draining. I’ve been getting really frustrated because the experiments haven’t been working either because of contamination and I can’t figure out where it’s coming from. This has actually made me decide to take a step back from research, at least until I can get my act together again. —
“Is research required?”
No. Some specialty programs recommend doing research but as far as the DDS program itself, at my school we are not required to do research to graduate. —
“If you’re doing research, does that mean you plan on specializing?”
Honestly I have yet to discover a strong passion for a any certain specialty, so for now the answer is no. I also feel like I don’t know enough yet from lack of experience since we literally just started working in the clinic. I’m definitely interested in doing a GPR after graduation, so that’s the plan for now. But if you do plan on specializing, research is always great to have experience in!
That’s all the questions that I feel were the most asked on this topic. If you are curious about anything else, comment or DM! Next week is finals week for me so I may be a bit slow to respond 🙃 alsooo If you do research, lmk what you study! Would love to know ♥️ also: TGIF
