This is Dementia Week. I was prompted by an Instagram post this morning so reflected on my last visit to mum at Sunrise where at 90 years old with her dementia mum enjoys a celebration of a resident reaching a 100 years with all her faculties intact and receiving a card from Her Majesty The Queen. Mum cannot put milk in the washing machine as there is not one in her reach but she has been known to collect items lying around! #mum #dementia #ageisjustanumber #monogeneans #centurion family #lifeisbeautiful #lifeiscruel #findacureforalzheimers

THE LINK BETWEEN ALZHEIMER’S & DIABETES BY DR MARK HYMAN **Ways to Prevent Cognitive Decline through Clean Eating** Scientists now calls Alzheimer’s disease “Type 3 diabetes.” Dr Mark Hyman explains how new research shows insulin resistance (from eating too many carbs and sugar and not enough fat) is one of major factors that starts the brain-damage cascade. This in turn robs the memory of over half the population in their 80s, leading to a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Statistics from the US show 10% of 65-year-olds, 25% of 75-year-olds and 50% of 85-year-olds will get dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. It’s predicted that Alzheimer’s will affect 106 million people by the year 2020 and is the seventh leading cause of death in the world. Dr Mark Hyman has dedicated his life to tackling the root causes of chronic disease through the power of function medicine and believes we all deserve a life of vitality. He is also the Medical Director at Cleveland Clinic’s Centre for Functional Medicine, Fonder of The UltraWellness Centre and a ten-time #1 New York Times Bestselling author. 👇👇 Click here to read the full story and watch the video! 👇👇 http://biohaxaustralia.psee.ly/HSCJE #cleaneating #eatwell #fitness #health #healthandwellness #diabetes #alzheimers #dementia #wellness #exercise #organic #paleo #weightgain #weightloss #bondi #bondilocal #biohaxaustralia #maroubra #coogee

While visiting Dolcie today, another resident walks in, looking like she’s about to burst into tears. She stands there for a second and extends her hand. Dolcie takes it and the woman sits down. After a few more seconds, she kisses my mothers hand, mom kisses back. The woman sits for a few more moments, gets up and walks out. All without a word. #dementia #dementiaawareness #empathy at Yerington, Nevada

My wife helps and understands the importance of taking care of my dad. He is in long-term care. After my mom passed away, I had to take on that role of visiting, caring for, spending time with, managing his administration and doing all the things that make my dad healthy, comfortable and happy. In no way was I as dedicated, nor good at it as my mom was. Life can often look like a highlight reel on instagram. But reality is that we all have to work hard and take care of our loved ones no matter what. #family #aging #parents #love #dementia #bestrong #dad #elderlycare #lifeisshort #patience #endurance

As people progress deeper into #dementia, it becomes more difficult for them to interpret sensory stimulation. So if there is background music or television, several people talking at once, or lots of coming and going the person with dementia will be less able to focus.

Music is a unique art form that touches the hearts and minds of people with Alzheimer's disease. The part of the brain that governs the ability to appreciate music is one of the last areas to be affected by the disease and people with Alzheimer's disease often will respond to music even in later stages of their illness. #seniorsaturday #alzheimers #dementia #music #caregiver #servicetoothers #love #advocacy #caringservicetoothers #cousinsheila #turbancousinsheila #turbantalkwithcousinsheila #dedication #akissontheforeheadfoundation #eldersocialization #caregiverappreciation

Book 18 of 2019 was Dear Dementia: The laughter and the tears by Ian Donaghy ✨ A lovely book that tackles such a heartbreaking and awful disease. My dad suffers from dementia and this book made me cry and smile at the illustrations and words. Dementia can affect anyone and you have to remember to focus on the person and not the disease. The memories will always remain 💛 Thank you Ian for bringing this book into the world 🌍 10/10 #amyreads #deardementia #iandonaghy #dementia #dementiaawareness #bookstagram #booklove #reading #read #bookworm #explore

Right at the end of my mum's life she would look like she was contemplating life. Even with dementia, she still had her will and strong character. But the last few weeks, she was more like this. I wondered what she was thinking or if she could think because of the dementia. My only happiness from this is that she was like a child and oblivious to dying. She didn't get to be scared of it. Although she may well have been at the early stages. My mum was so healthy. She was fit and was on no medication. Without dementia, she would probably have lived for years. Instead, in six years, dementia accelerated the aging process and she lost mobility, her mind, memories and everything in six years. That's shit. But my mum was happy and I was happy looking after her so that she wouldn't die in a nursing home. A daily reminder for any day of the week 💚 . Yesterday, I spent some time with my gran. As we were driving around she made comments about the clouds and how fluffy and beautiful they were to look at. I agreed, listened and looked up myself 💚 . When we got home she smelt some flowers I had on the table, “They smell lovely.” she said. I agreed, listened and smelt the flowers too 💚 . Thing is, my gran has dementia, she referred to these two little observations multiple times but each time I reacted the same and reaffirmed to me that it’s the little things in life, like looking up at the sky, smelling the roses every now and then and spending quality time with loved ones. . Thank you Gran for reminding me to do this 💚 at Dubrovnik, Croatia

And the story goes on from there. What’s wrong with this picture? Have you ever eaten the genes from a plant that kill beetles, weeds, and rats, but not humans? Would you knowingly eat pesticide created by the company responsible for the gas chambers of the #Holocaust ? Do you want to support that platform? Take a closer look at what the genetic “engineers” are doing to modify and adulterate Nature’s food using bug killing genes and weed killing genes they all know good and well causes #cancer and #dementia. Regulation of GM crops in the United States is divided among three regulatory agencies: the Environmental Projection Agency (EPA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Each of these agencies regulates transgenic crops from a different perspective. #EPA regulates biopesticides, including Bt toxins, under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). If a #crop is genetically engineered to carry a gene for a Bt toxin, EPA requires the developer to verify that the toxin is safe for the #environment and conduct a food-safety analysis to ensure that the foreign protein is not allergenic. #FDA is responsible for regulating the safety of GM crops that are eaten by humans or animals. According to a policy established in 1992, FDA considers most GM crops as “substantially equivalent” to non-GM crops. In such cases, GM crops are designated as “Generally Recognized as Safe” under the #Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) and do not require pre-market approval. If, however, the insertion of a transgene into a food crop results in the expression of foreign proteins that differ significantly in structure, function, or quality from natural plant proteins and are potentially harmful to human health, FDA reserves the authority to apply more stringent provisions of FFDCA requiring the mandatory pre-market approval of food additives, whether or not they are the products of biotechnology. #usda #geneticengineers #FFDCA at U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

AGEING & DEMENTIA This beautiful ship wreck off Magnetic Island inspired a post on ageing and memory. Memory loss can be part of the normal ageing process. While minor declines in memory such as occasional memory lapses may be common in older age, noticeable changes in memory and thinking, as well as changes in behaviour or personality, may be early signs of dementia. Dementia is an umbrella term for a number of disorders that can affect the brain and the way a person thinks and behaves. It is thought to occur as a result of nerve cell damage within the brain. This damage interrupts the transfer of information between brain cells & as a result, a person’s thinking & behaviour is affected. The main symptoms associated with dementia include memory loss, confusion, difficulties completing everyday tasks (e.g., managing finances), problems expressing language (e.g. naming others), a decline in visual perception (e.g. giving directions), & changes in personality (e.g. more irritable). Age is the largest risk factor for dementia, with individuals aged 65 years and over being most at-risk of developing the disease. The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, which represents between 60-80% of dementia cases. People with dementia might also develop other mood & behavioural problems, such as: depressed or anxious mood: loss of interest in people & events, withdrawal, aggression, disinhibition, hallucinations and delusions.
