Last Year At Marienbad (1961)
Directed by Alain Resnais *
Starring Delphine Seyrig, Giorgio Albertazzi, Sacha Pitoëff
Hypnotic, dreamlike, mysterious, aloof, infuriating, and enigmatic, this is an incredible movie. Set in a huge château (actually Nymphenburg Palace in Munich) with corridors, mirrors and baroque designs that make you feel you are actually journeying around a subconscious mind, we are presented with characters who may or may not have met before and who may or may not be constructing memories or alternate truths about their existence. I know that sounds a bit pompous and certainly the overt seriousness of the film can be off putting, and yet I loved it. The cinematography is absolutely stunning and the very deliberate poising of characters and freezing of motion is captivating. A unique experience yet it’s possible to see how it must have influenced other filmmakers who have wanted to adopt a non linear approach.
