▫️ hello friends, for #mentalhealthawarenessmonth, a few kind friends have shared their mental health journeys with me and allowed me to illustrate my interpretation.

I’ve struggled with mental health my entire life, and yet until recently I somehow didn’t feel it was “important” to share. I’m so happy to be living in a time where people can be open about their mental issues, and celebrate the things that work for them.
Ever since I was young I’ve dealt with anxiety & depression. Anxiety makes me feel like I’m on high alert, overstimulated, loud sounds, difficult conversations, traffic, social events and the like all trigger me. Its like I’m living with volume turned up all the time. Inversely, depression make me feel like I’m underwater, or in a fog. Nothing is interesting, and simple tasks or events seem like the require a level of energy that I couldn’t possibly manage. Waffling between both is exhausting and sometimes terrifying.
For most of my life I’ve been medicated for both issues. For all the backlash on over-medicating, in most cases it really is helpful. I still have breakthrough episodes, but for the most part my anxiety & depression are under control. I think there’s a misconceptions that medications targeted for mental health issues make you feel like you’re on top of the world. They don’t. They just make you feel normal again. You still have emotions, and highs & lows, but they’re more akin to the type that everyone else deals with.
Medication isn’t for everyone, but for the people it’s for, it REALLY works. Don’t let anyone else’s opinions on medication prevent you from seeking out help when you need it.
One of my favorite sayings on mental health is: “If you can’t make your own serotonin, store-bought is fine”
And I promise you, it’s REALLY fine! You owe it to yourself to use all tools at you disposal to combat mental illness. • • • • •
