BLUE ADVENTURE. I am back in Sweden now after some great adventures around the island Pico in the Azores. What a trip great trip we had with huge blue sharks at "camera scratching" distance, aggregating Chilean devil rays, eagle rays watching their cave, schooling barracudas, a krill infested nightdive and the last magic day whatching the sperm whales and swimming with Atlantic spotted dolphins in a calm ocean.
Thanks to all the brave divers joining in, and to Dania, Enrique and Caspar @cwazores and the rest of their great staff, and of course to @scubatravel.se who, as always, set it up so nicely for the whole group.
CONSERVATION. Diving with the sharks in a respectful way is actually creating a real value locally (flights, hotel nights, restaurant visits and dive operators and more…) and I think if you ask the sharks it is a great alternative to the 100 meter plus long fishing boats from Spain coming over to the Azores to fill up with apex predators like blue sharks.
IUCN REDLIST STATUS: Near threatened. The Blue Shark (Prionace glauca) is taken in large numbers, an estimated 20 million individuals annually, mainly as bycatch but also as a targeted species. Little is known about the overall population and many catches are unreported. There is concern over the removal of such large numbers of keystone predator from the oceanic ecosystem.
