NIGHT MOVES - 1975
Director - Arthur Penn
Cast - Gene Hackman, Susan Clark, Jennifer Warren, Edward Binns, Janet Ward, Harris Yulin, Melanie Griffith, James Woods, John Crawford.
An ex football player turned private detective Hackman is hired to look for the daughter, Griffith, of a bit time hollywood actress, Ward. He begins to realise her motive for wanting her daughter to return which will allow her to live a “rich lifestyle”.. what he stumbles on however is a much more sinister plot involving the mother’s second husband and step father, Crawford, film stuntmen and a young motor mechanic, Woods. Also, there is a very strange woman in Warren, who is not clear with her answers and asks some very peculiar questions..one about her nipples..
A film noir, with a nice jazz score and expectedly a great performance from Hackman. He exudes the traits of a man broken by his own relationship with a cheating Clark, who needs more emotionally from him but has the charisma of an ex football player who can converse with the teen nymph Griffith and enjoy his own private eye work.
I found myself wanting to understand this movie, i struggled with what was happening in some scenes and it seemed unrelated to the story, which i later discovered was quite a convoluted one that perhaps wasn’t explained well over the course of the film and rushed at the end.
The ending however is an awesome one, and like many of its time not an expected one. Admittedly i may need to watch this again. It felt like i missed something. It’s certainly not your average film, with a few strange characters and bizarre dialogue, but an interesting look.
Would love to hear what others think..
