If you are just making your foray into coding, or want to learn more about the philosophy behind Generative Art, I highly recommend picking up this book by Matt Pearson (zenbullets.com). This was a book that really shifted my perspective on using computers to create art. It's got a bunch of code examples in Processing alongside case studies of famous works by some prominent new media artists that are employing this technique. So you can start coding along with the book, it's quite fun.
The book starts off diving into the history and theory of generative art. But it quickly progresses into create artwork with simple lines. Eventually, it teaches you how you can add randomness, and agency to these digital primitives. It's such a neat way to build things up and create something complex out of the composition of many simple elements. I could keep rambling, but I strongly urge you to pick up a copy on Amazon and support this awesome artist and author!
