Recently dad has shown me pictures he had taken almost 40 years ago. As a beginner photographer, living in Warsaw, he had been taking part in mass protests against the communist government. No firearms were used that day. However, ZOMO didn't mind to use batons, tear gas grenades and water cannon trucks. During our extensive travels in Europe, the best tips on places to eat at have consistently come from the owners of the apartments we’ve stayed in.. .. .. Mr. Gabor, the astute keeper of the apartment we stayed in at Budapest was at the top of the heap during our travels earlier in September. Based on his recommendation, we made our way to “Gerbeaud Cafe” on Vörösmarty Square at the heart of the downtown of the Hungarian capital.. .. .. This ‘coffee house’, (a stone’s throw from the delightful Danube) which dates back to 1858 and is certainly one of the finest in Europe, served as a fitting finale to our sojourn in beautiful Hungary! The Communist era left Bucharest with districts full of panel buildings. The district surrounding the Palace of the Parliament or the People's House became an alternative to the Old Town. Some people say that the #Parliament, the biggest building of Europe, was inspired by Soviet architecture, others say that it looks more like North Korea. The Palace itself has a lot of Romanian motives in its architecture and became the “peak point” of the Communist era style. Communist era apartments. My guide told me her parents back in the 80s paid the equivalent of 30 euros a month in rent for a one bedroom apartment. Bucharest's architecture is a mixture between classical and modernist styles! The city is surrounded by buildings built in five main architectural styles: the Brancovian style, the Neo-romanian style, the Art Nouveau, the Art Deco and the Communist era style. The modern landscape of Bucharest combines all of these styles and at first sight it seems really disorganised.
