I’m a man who never had much use for religion. I’ve seen too much ugliness in this world for me to stomach, “God works in mysterious ways.”
But if I were to entertain that there was a higher power’s hand in Creation, I can only assume that Colorado was God’s favorite. Her masterpiece.
Colorado is the maiden that even the most jaded refugee will fall in love with upon the first blessed sight of her.
But she’s also that rare creature that, once she has you, with supernatural prowess, causes a man to cascade into a deeper love every day he remains with her.
She’s the sort of disarming lady a writer could heap with most eloquent praise, only for him to toss it all away upon the sight of the toss of her hair and her coy look over her shoulder.
If we are to suppose still that Colorado has a heart, and an unfettered soul, it would be the San Juan Range, where, in interludes such as this, the colors of the world, the greens, the reds, and the dark blues, show themselves as one.
The withdrawals of finishing the San Juan 14ers were pained with the realization that, with the 58 list still undone, I would have to climb lesser peaks in other ranges.
A fear of all men is that, upon the loss of great love, all that shall follow will never compare in making him feel as he did then.
And the San Juans could be said to do that, spoiling any others for you forever.
This weekend, I returned to the San Juans to ski, and point out proudly to my mother all the peaks I’d climbed.
Alas, stubborn storms obscured the summits and uppermost escarpments of Sneffels, and the Wilson group.
But Colorado can be kind even in the midst of a great tempest, and as we left Telluride, she revealed this.
