As we head into 2019 I have only 1,400 books left to sell from the original print run of 3,000. However, I’m expecting to print both a second edition AND an Italian language edition at the end of the year. Thank you to everyone who has bought a book and has also helped spread publicity about it around the world! For a self published and self-distributed book I’m amazed at how successful it has become. Thank you This book has been described as “A masterpiece” by Professor Robert McCarter,” Brilliant and exhaustive” by Kenneth Frampton, “The essence of architecture” by Hugh Pearman and “This book is simply amazing.....One could open this book at any page and appreciate its format, clarity and beauty. I think it will reward endless encounters.” John Klingman, New Orleans University.

“Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited” by Richard Murphy Here is a film made by Melbourne School of Design showing Richard Murphy giving their students a tour of the Castelvecchio. Note: at the time the bridge in the Cangrande space was closed and this has affected the sequencing of spaces in the film. Richards book is referred to frequently! https://youtu.be/Fklw5dgXxgo This book has been described as “A masterpiece” by Professor Robert McCarter,” Brilliant and exhaustive” by Kenneth Frampton, “The essence of architecture” by Hugh Pearman and “This book is simply amazing.....One could open this book at any page and appreciate its format, clarity and beauty. Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited by Richard Murphy The bridge across the space created for the display of the equestrian statue is at 45 degrees to the geometry of Scarpa’s design. It takes visitors from the Reggia emerging through Scarpa’s new opening in the Comune wall and onto the final galleries. The bridge not only dramatises Scarpa’s space but pulls the visitor towards the statue and in particular a conversation with the count and his enigmatic smile. The parapets of steel and burnt pitch pine are particularly beautifully detailed. This book has been described as “A masterpiece” by Professor Robert McCarter,” Brilliant and exhaustive” by Kenneth Frampton, “The essence of architecture” by Hugh Pearman and “This book is simply amazing.....One could open this book at any page and appreciate its format, clarity and beauty. I think it will reward endless encounters.” John Klingman, New Orleans University.

Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited by Richard Murphy The screen wall placed between the external space created for the Cangrande statue and the first room of the final galleries on the first floor has three functions. Firstly it is Scarpa’s way of filling the void between outside and inside created by his dramatic demolition. Secondly on the outside are steel framed burnt pitch pine panels which form a background for the statue; and thirdly it forms a special enclosure for the five paintings “I Politicci” by Cavazolla. Note how it appears to be free standing with a slice of light between it and the stucco luccido soffit. Magagnato called it an abstraction of an altar piece. It is another reminder of the indivisibility of the art, architecture and history of the building in Scarpa’s creation.

Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited by Richard Murphy Some books on sale in the Venice Biennale gardens bookshop, so close to where Scarpa designed many exhibitions. The snap was taken by Peter Guthrie who also took most of the photographs within the book including the front cover, a detail of the main facade and its subtle transformation. Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited by Richard Murphy An independent access to the first floor Sala Boggian was designed by Scarpa in 1963 but not constructed till 1965. It had a very short life as the concert hall use of the hall was judged illegal because of inadequate fire escape and it has never been used since. The wind lobby entrance is a steel and pitch pine box placed asymmetrically in a larger steel and glass screen itself containing a larger exit door. Scarpa reasoned that audiences arrive in ones and twos but leave en mass. The shape of a spy hole window in the doors resonates with Scarpa’s pull handle design. Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited by Richard Murphy The arrangement of paintings on Room 10 on the first floor of the Reggia remains as Scarpa designed except for the frescoes on the walls which Maganato decided might have been original after all and had them re-exposed in 1986, eight years after Scarpa’s death.  The arrangement of the paintings on easels and hung freestanding between rods is classic Scarpa, in particular the location of the “Madonna  of the Quails” by Pisanello and “Madonna and Rose Garden” by Stefano de Verona which he places with their back to the visitor pulling them across to that side of the room. Only then do they see the tiny “Entombment of Christ”by Lippi which Scarpa placed in a special felt lined frame. Richard Murphy’s recent book has been described as “A masterpiece” by Professor Robert McCarter, ”Brilliant and exhaustive” by Kenneth Frampton, “The essence of architecture” by Hugh Pearman “simply amazing.....One could open this book at any page and appreciate its format, clarity and beauty. I think it will reward endless encounters.” John Klingman, New Orleans University and Richard Rogers wrote “I am immensely impressed by the depth of research ... into one of the greatest 20th century architects.” HAVE YOU BOUGHT YOUR COPY YET??? One of two fountains Scarpa retained from the 1926 garden, this drinking fountain he placed in a pool and detailed the fountain to “float” just above the level of the water. It also signals its presence on entry to the courtyard as the goat’s head can be seen across the top of the hedges with the fountain and pool concealed and then revealed along the journey to the entrance. The sound of the fountains also directs the visitor towards the north east corner and the new entrance to the museum. Alongside the photos are annotated sequences of Scarpa’s sketches tracing the evolution of the design.

Two of many illustrated examples of supports for sculptures in Scarpa’s arrangement of the sculpture gallery at Castelvecchio. Two saints sit either side of Christ crucified and are raised up on steel platforms which are made as if they were two halves joined. A sarcophagus is supported on two supports offered out as a hand but the sculpture itself is get above the limestone by diamond shaped steel bars; the whole weight of the sarcophagus appearing to hover over its support. Alongside the photos are annotated sequences of Scarpa’s sketches tracing the evolution of his designs.
