Here is another very important prompt from @hollyfae_art and her list about ocean conservation. This one deals with how oil drilling and spills effect our oceans.
My mermaid, like many animals caught in oil spills, can't breathe well. Most of us know about the immediate repercussions of an oil spill. Animals suffocate, have heart attacks, birds especially freeze because they can't regulate their body temperatures anymore. But what about the long term effects?
For example, the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was almost ten years ago, but the area is still not completely recuperated. There are carcinogens and other toxins in crude oil, so many populations were hit by major illnesses. Dolphins in the area are still suffering decreased birth rates and more stillbirths because of it. Many of the little islands in the gulf, which are vital to seabirds for nesting, are now inhospitable for them. The plant life like mangroves still aren't growing back in the now toxic sand, and the birds need these plants to nest and hunt in, as do lemon sharks. Lemons usually give birth in mangroves, because it's a safe place for their babies to grow up. But poison that they can't even see has made it unsafe.
Remember that areas that have suffered an oil spill need help long after the initial months after it occurs. You can help by donating your time to an organization that cleans our oceans and beaches. You might not know how to help, but they do. You can also donate money to these organizations, or any that support affected wild life like WWF. Just look into where you donate, so that the money goes where it's doing good and not to an irresponsible group.
