We at the BrokePhotoCollective love all sorts of cameras. When we are out and about, our first choice is usually going to be one of our various SLRs.
If you want to travel light, most people reach for their cell phone.
10 years ago, a digital compact would be the go to.
In the pre-digital days, there was a small number of subcompact “travel” cameras: Then Minox 35, Rollei 35 and Olympus Pen camera’s were popular, but generally used scale focusing where the photographer had to guess the distance. The Japanese camera makers created compact rangefinders like the Konica C35, Canon QL28 or Minolta Hi-Matic 7E.
In the 1980s, Olympus introduced a subcompact camera with a built-in Rangefinder the Olympus XA.
These days, an XA isn’t exactly budget friendly, but we have been talking about them in the collective and dug our a few shots from all the way back in 1997/1998.
Make no mistake, the XA was a superb little camera for those wanting to travel light, but maintain full control over their photography.
