"I am a co-founder of a Digital Marketing Company in Vadodara. I always wanted give back to the society so I had reached out to my school friends with this idea of starting a socially conscious group that came to be known as Happy Faces, Vadodara. Being a part of this group gives me a chance to be self-motivated, inspire and be inspired by young individuals around me. We had begun with a simple act of distributing water bottles to the needy in the scorching summer heat. Looking at the success of this activity, we started circulating this message in our social groups which resulted in more people joining us and we rose big in numbers. We then started various activities to reach out to the weaker sections of the society. We designed a clothes collection campaign in the city, where we collected around 35K clothes in a span of 15 days. The collected clothes were segregated according to size, gender and durability which we then distributed in slums to more than 2000 families. We continue to meet as a group every Sunday to brainstorm ideas on contributing to the society in small ways.
An incident that really impacted me was when I met a very old lady selling toiletries going door to door. I sat her down with a glass of cold drink and asked what circumstances led her to do this. She told me that her husband passed away years ago and she has no one to take care of her and that is the reason she works as a sales person in a local distributorship. She had a target of 7 products daily to be sold and in return she got a meagre commission of INR 300. The very same day I circulated a message about her across the city and our group took an ownership of this issue deciding to help her in some way. Since that day we as a team have been regularly helping her by purchasing her products from her residence.
I am thankful that volunteering gave me a chance to drive a big team and work with them collectively for the greater good." - Piyush Khare
