Yesterday ‘Aesthetic Initialisms’ opened for a day and night at @onca_arts.
Curated by @mywildday, the #exhibition celebrated LGBT+ History Month through #photography, mixed media and film, and will be continuing in March at the Falmer Campus at Sussex University. Myself and @bethan.m.clarke were lucky enough to be asked to contribute our work-in-progress project ‘Glitch[ed]’, which looks at glitching, photography and written #memory in response to historical and contemporary perceptions of non-traditional #gender roles and sexual identity, by hiding personal memories inside the coding of photographs. A huge thank you to Charlie for her curatorial debut! Unfortunately, since the story inside the coding is too small to see on here, I will transcribe a segment of it for you below.
“I was once told by someone in a #gay social group of mine, after arguing over the use of the word ‘faggot’, that well.. he wouldn’t fuck [me] anyway because it would be like fucking a woman. I mean, I guess he was implying that I was too ‘feminine’ to be desirable, and that femininity or ‘woman-like’ qualities (whatever they are.. I didn’t stop to ask) were also equally passive traits which were, to him, very easily dismissed. It also didn’t seem to occur to him that there was absolutely no way he would ever have the pleasure of finding out...”
