"A faithful heart makes wishes come true." -Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
My entire life I've always believed that my word is my bond and should always be honored. I take my promises seriously and follow through on my words with actions; that's the only way my father taught me to be.
I've come to realize more and more often that the world is full of people who say they will do this and that, and make all types of empty promises that they have no intention of following up on. People constantly outright lie to my face and I sometimes wonder why -- perhaps it is simply the nature of their character to be... less than honest.
In my opinion, this behavior is the most destructive in interpersonal human relations. A person does not build a home by laying one brick and quitting, or by drawing plans on paper. It takes commitment, dedication, persistence, and most importantly loyalty.. to those you work with sure, but loyalty to your own word.
I would assert that loyalty is probably the most important value of all, because everything meaningful that we build depends upon it. We have to fulfill our obligations, we have to do what's right -- even when it becomes difficult. We have to start what we finish, and honor our promises to other people. Failure to do so will repel the good people and it becomes so difficult to accomplish anything meaningful in our lives.
