Today marked the 19th and final day of fasting for Baha’is around the world. Some years it is has been somewhat easy for me and some years it has been more challenging. This year it was all of the above... but more than that, it was beautiful.
Every year, Baha’is from around the globe spend 19 days in preparation for the Bahá’í new year (Nat Ruz). During these 19 days, we refrain from eating or drinking anything from sunrise to sunset. It is meant as a physical symbol of the work we are doing internally to reflect on our relationship with God. I always find this time of year to be special for both my family and myself.
We have had such beautiful experiences here in Sydney with our Australian family members during this fast. We’ve enjoyed wonderful prayer services at the Bahá’í House of Worship, jumping in the pounding waves with the kids at Newport Beach, dipping our toes in the surf at Bondi, exploring museums in the afternoon, chasing kangaroos near the capital Canberra, visiting with long-time friends and making new ones as well, and experiencing this special time of year in a completely new environment surrounded with new things to discover.... and each night (most days) ending the adventure with family prayer time.
I know this post is not overtly related to my work in music, but it occurs to me that, spending these days halfway across the world with the ones I love would not be possible without having a tremendously supportive family and being blessed to do the work I do. Counting my blessings. Happy Naw-Ruz!
