Do not post MLK quotes & think that is enough. It is not. Do more. Stand up for your friends, and strangers. Speak out. Fight bigotry, of all types. Be kind & compassionate to difference. But do not compromise your morals for an easy time. Educate yourself. All of this. Not just on MLK day. Every day.
My favorite story about my grandpa used to be that he marched with MLK. I used to think that was one of the coolest things about him, and told everyone I knew. I realized recently that this wasn’t it. The coolest thing about him was that he never stopped fighting for others’ rights. His fight was not confined to MLK day. He was constantly active in his community, pushing for inclusion and love. I strive to be like that.
Today, the Supreme Court approved Trump’s 2017 military ban on trans people, 5-4. This is unacceptable. I don’t understand how five people with supposedly the best legal backgrounds in the country said this was right. But. What I do know is that we are not going anywhere. We are one of the strongest communities. We will persevere; this is not forever. But it is also not time to lay low. It is time to stand strong. To keep proving we are here. Allies, this is also your time. To show up for us. To make a difference.
If you are struggling, call @trevorproject at 866-488-7386. Or the Trans Lifeline at 877-565-8860 (US) or 877-330-6366 (Canada). You are not alone. While the government may not validate your identity, you are still valid. You are still you, at the very core of your being. Do not let them take that from you.
