Another bison from the National Wildlife Refuge. Increasing the number of herds across the USA is a major conservation goal, and one of the reasons is that bison should return to being a major ecological force in an increasing number of places and habitats.
It's a bit weird that this species has decreased so much bit is still not endangered. Although more than 30,000 bison are managed for conservation goals, spending their time in public and private herds, as many as 400,000 bison are raised as livestock!
Of all these "wild" bison herds, only the bison population has existed continuously since prehistoric times, all other bison herds in the US have in different ways been altered by humans. This frostbitten lives in a managed herd in Iowa, close to City, in a beautiful National Wildlife Refuge. Being Swedish, it's an odd feeling entering this refuge. With short-eared owls and Northern harriers patrolling the fields it feels just like home. Then all of a sudden a herd of bison appears, and you're instantly beemed into the habitat of one of the most iconic species of North America. And you get this question in your head: "How can such a massive and powerful animal be sooo cute?"
