The Lion, the Leopard and the Cheetah. These are the apex predators of the savannah. But although these are the ‘top cats’ of the African Plains, these animals are still under threat from poaching.
Lion populations have decreased by 43% in the last 21 years,. Due to being pushed out of their habitats by growing human populations, there has been an increase in human wildlife conflict, whereby people have resulted in killing lions that venture into the communities.
Whereas, the leopard has lost around 36% of its habitat range, most of this is due to the conflict with humans, as leopards often venture into farms and hunt livestock, leading the local communities to retaliate.
Cheetahs have lost around 76.5% of their range due to both habitat loss and fragmentation. In the last few years, cheetahs have moved from being classified vulnerable to being endangered.
These big cats are vital to the ecosystem, and they affect all other species. This means without these predators, the whole ecosystem would be out of alignment. We need to protect these beautiful cats for future generations.
