För bara något år sedan var jag livrädd för bin och insekter. 🐝 Jag viftade, vevade och fick panik över surrande insekter. 🏃🏼‍♀️💃🏼🙅🏼‍♀️ Idag är jag inte det konstigt nog. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Troligtvis för att min moster @veghellen76 kom med världens gulligaste tips: ”Jag brukar tänka att bin och insekter är som dom små gulliga animerade figurerna i filmer!” Och ja.. Det botade min insektsfobi 😂 Insekter och bin är så viktiga. 🐝 Inte minst för pollineringens skull. 🌻 Så i vår när jag ska bygga upp min trädgård från scratch så kommer jag att tänka på våra pollinerare, så att dom kan hjälpa mig att få fina och rika skörder. 🌾 Picturesource: pinterest ————————————————- Just a few years ago, I was terrified of bees and insects. 🐝 I waved, woven and panicked over buzzing insects. 💃🏼🏃🏼‍♀️ Today I am not that strange enough. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Probably because my aunt @veghellen came up with the world's cutest tips: "I usually think that bees and insects are like the little cute animated characters in movies!" Using both timber hives and paradise polystyrene hives I have been able to compare them against each other to see any differences. Because of the success, I swapped out the remaining timber hives for the paradise hives. Now running all paradise bee hives in the apiary 🐝😍

Such an interesting week. Yesterday my bees had their first flight of the year. Some of them brought back pollen from very early flowers which is food for the egg laying queen and her larvae. But now in the early spring they are very vulnerable to diseases, especially if they got all of their winter food, honey, replace by table sugar by the #beekeeper last year. We care much for the bees and have developed probiotics for honeybees called SymBeeotic. #symbeeotic contain their own lactic acid bacteria which are their own immune defense. It is the same 13 different #honeybeelacticacidbacteria as in #honeyhunterselixir 😱 A needed boost, after winter rest, when the bees natural numbers are low. We got an order this week from a beekeeper abroad. Last year he bought SymBeeotic and he experienced much healthier bees. @tinamariegoodwin and I took a fantastic class tonight at RiGeneration Nutrition (Eagle River, AK) to learn what it takes to be successful beekeepers in Alaska. You guys... bees are AMAZING! 🐝❤️Their life cycle, work ethic and habits are draw-droppingly awesome. They are inspirational! This class was simply the first of a series, but I already feel like someone could hand us a box of bees, ready for a hive, and we could handle the transfer. We might make a mistake or two, but that’s what learning is all about! (Plus, the bees will let us know if we’re doing it wrong 😳😬🐝...) Craig and I had a squiz at the hive this afternoon as it had been awhile. The hive bettle traps revealed quite a few dead ones and a few alive ones. The brood box was humming along and the top box had a few frames of honey. Still bloody clueless as to what we are looking at but we have hired someone to help us, so at least they’ll know what their looking at! 🤔It’s been a hot summer here in Newrybar, little to no real rain. We will keep checking on them. Feel free to impart your bee knowledge 🐝 at Newrybar

... Honey Bees 1 🐝 👍🏼 Polar Vortex 0 💨 ❄️ . My bees are doing great so far. They have a huge cluster and have plenty of sugar and honey. 🥶🧦🧤🧣 Bees can survive bitter cold winters. Worker bees have one job in the winter, keep the queen warm. To do this they huddle together to form a winter cluster. In order to generate heat they tremble their wing muscles but their wings don’t move. It’s essentially their way of shivering. 🥶🐝❄️🔥 Though the queen is always at the center of the cluster, worker bees rotate from the outside to the inside of the cluster, so no individual worker bee gets too cold. The temperature of the cluster ranges from 46 degrees at the exterior to 80 degrees at the interior. The colder the weather is outside, the more compact the cluster becomes. Wrapping the hives in insulation helps them keep a steady temperature within the hive and keeps the cold drafts out on those windy days. On days when the temp jumps above 50°, many of them will take “cleansing” flights. They’ll fly out of the hive to relieve themselves since they never go to the bathroom inside. They can hold it in for weeks if needed. 🐝🧤🍯🧣🧦 Along with 10lbs of hardened sugar, I also gave them a moisture box. This is a layer of wood chips that sits above them. It insulates them from the cold above but more importantly prevents condensation from dripping on them. With thousands of bees exhaling, their heat and moisture rises through the wood chips and condenses on the underside of the top over and eventually drips onto the wood chips and not them.
