On our walk today, I noticed some old horse tracks in snow. Kiki and Earl had a great time sniffing and digging at the tracks, while Séamus was on self appointed horse lookout duty in case it decided to come back. 🐎 . Did you know that sniffing is crucial for a dogs mental health and well being? It releases endorphins, aids in their ability to process emotions, and can help calm an anxious or fearful dog, giving them something positive to focus on. . How many of us tug our dogs along on walks when they stop to sniff? We’ve all done it. But it’s important to remember that they are simply trying to process the world around them. City dogs in particular have little time outdoors, and little time to explore at their own pace. . Remember next time when you are dragging your dog away from a spot they’ve sniffed too long, they are not trying to make you late for work. They are not trying to take over the world. It is not a problem behaviour that needs fixing (unfortunately there are “popular” trainers who claim that to be the case). They are just doing their best to satisfy their needs before going back indoors. . At the beginning, Earl didn’t know how to explore using his nose, and in fact had almost an averse reaction to it - odd for a hound, but likely due to someone not allowing him to do so in the past, or being punished for it. Between using a snuffle mat at home, doing treat scatters in long grass on walks and teaching him “use your nose” and “go sniff” it has taught him how to explore the world around him. So if you also have a dog who doesn’t tend to use their sniffer, these are great ways to help them learn. 💚 . Turco working on some balance and confidence building. 💪 First time we ever working on this. You can clearly see with his body language that I asked a lot of him. He worked a lot to be able to accomplish this! . People might ask, "why have him do this, what's the point?" Simple answer, the point is that I made it a point. I decided he was going to do it and I helped him accomplish it. Because I know that the end result will have a positive benefit for my dog. Was he stressing maybe? Yes! Was he unsure? Yes! Was it easy? No! Was it pretty? No! However, once I commit to doing it, if I was to stop as soon as he hesitates, then that means I let his fear win. Therefore possibly dipping his confidence. That would be me failing as an owner because I set my dog up to fail, by giving him a task and letting him quit. But if I guide him through it and help him accomplish it, guess what? He realizes that nothing bad came of it and his confidence gets a boost. Board and train Bo lives in a busy household that has a human kid in it. With that in mind his family needs safe and reliable ways to help burn off his energy! Fetch is a great way to play and by building a good drop he learns that it's okay when people take away things that he has. This second part is an important safety feature to help prevent resource guarding! Win win! Good job Bo!
