@Regrann from @nasa - In this video captured at 1,500 frames per second with a high-speed camera, the International Space Station (@ISS), with a crew of six onboard, is seen in silhouette as it transits the sun at roughly five miles per second during a partial solar eclipse, Monday, Aug. 21, 2017 near Banner, Wyoming. Onboard as part of the crew are: NASA astronauts Peggy Whitson, Jack Fischer (@Astro2Fish), and Randy Bresnik (@AstroKomrade); Russian cosmonauts Fyodor Yurchikhin and Sergey Ryazanskiy (@SergeyISS); and ESA (@EuropeanSpaceAgency) astronaut Paolo Nespoli (@Astro_Paolo). A total solar eclipse swept across a narrow portion of the contiguous United States from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. A partial solar eclipse was visible across the entire North American continent along with parts of South America, Africa, and Europe. @Regrann from @sciencemuseum - Today much of America will witness a once in a lifetime celestial event: a total solar eclipse! An eclipse happens when the moon’s path of orbit crosses in front of the sun, blocking its light momentarily. Most of North America and some areas of South America will be plunged into darkness for a few minutes as the path of the eclipse swings across 14 states. Here in the UK we’ll be able to see a partial eclipse (if the clouds don’t block the view), beginning at 19.40 BST and reaching maximum eclipse around 20.00. The UK won’t see a total solar eclipse until September 23, 2090! Remember to stay safe if you're watching the eclipse: looking directly at the sun can damage your eyes. Always use eclipse viewing glasses or watch the eclipse through a pin-hole projection. You can find more information on how to stay safe here: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety

I'm so fortunate to have been able to witness this once-in-a-lifetime event. And I'm happy that I was able to capture this spectacular photo for people that didn't get to see it first-hand. #eclipse #2017eclipse #solareclipse #astronomy

Will the sky be clear enough to see the eclipse? This question was on the minds of many people attempting to view yesterday's solar eclipse. The path of total darkness crossed the mainland of the USA from coast to coast, from Oregon to South Carolina -- but a partial eclipse occurred above all of North America. Unfortunately, many locations saw predominantly clouds. One location that did not was a bank of Green River Lake, Wyoming. There, clouds blocked the Sun intermittantly up to one minute before totality. Parting clouds then moved far enough away to allow the center image of the featured composite sequence to be taken. This image shows the corona of the Sun extending out past the central dark Moon that blocks our familiar Sun. The surrounding images show the partial phases of the solar eclipse both before and after totality. #nasa #discoveries #science #astronomy #cosmo

2333333 . #solareclipse #amazed #astronomy #astonishing #riverton #wyoming #usa #travel #nikon #nikond5200 #nofilter

Was anyone else at the @ontariosciencecentre yesterday to capture some photos of the solar eclipse⁉️ . . . What a neat set-up and an overall great event that allowed the community to safely observe the Moon passing between the Earth and the Sun. . . . #aug2017 #solareclipseday #solar #eclipse #party #ontariosciencecentre #rare #events #outdoorevents #community #together #eclipseglasses #telescopes #viewing #science #astronomy #stars #moon #sun #earth #canada #toronto #thesix #cool #stuff #oneofakind #picoftheday

Driving 6 to 10 hours after a 48 hour trip didn't sound like an option... So what's the next best thing to see, experience and capture the eclipse when you have 30 min before totality and you don't have a fancy camera with mega lens and proper filters? You improvise an helioscope with what you have: in my case, a GoPro, a box (Karma Grip box), a soldering pedestal and little bit of video editing magic. And it worked!!!!! Taking the pinhole technique to the next level! #eclipse2017 #nerdsrule #gopro #karma #sun #solareclipse #optics #physics #astronomy #science

Solar Eclipse 2017 Full size, 40 MP image here: http://bit.ly/2vjZyjI Unfortunately I wasn't in the path of totality. The best I got was about 65% totality. But still, it was an awesome afternoon witnessing a spectacular phenomena. Shot from Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

So disappointed in myself for not traveling to a state in the path of totality. Guess I have to wait for 2024. Hope everyone who saw the full eclipse feels high on life. Just as fast as the moon passed the sun is how fast life passes us by. Go out and enjoy it!! This is all I got haha. Still I enjoyed a nice swim with the ocean when it was happening.🌊🌒 #exploreliny #newyork #beach #ocean #solareclipse #moon #sun #astronomy #sky #beachday #gooutside #explore #livelife #behappy

Since my photo capabilities couldn't go beyond the iPhone 7, I didn't get to take some of these magnificent pictures of totality that I've seen on social media. But this picture right here is exactly what totality looked like from the naked eye. When day time turned to night and the sky went dark. I even saw Venus popping out to say hello. I'm still awestruck from what I witnessed yesterday. Here are some of the coolest pictures of #TheGreatAmericanEclipse that happen on #August212017. #SolarEclipse #Astronomy #2024IsNext #WhatAnExperience #TotalityOrBust #ISawTotality

A quasar (/ˈkweɪzɑːr/) (also quasi-stellar object or QSO) is an active galactic nucleus of very high luminosity. A quasar consists of a supermassive black hole surrounded by an orbiting accretion disk of gas. As gas in the accretion disk falls toward the black hole, energy is released in the form of electromagnetic radiation. Quasars emit energy across the electromagnetic spectrum and can be observed at radio, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, and X-raywavelengths. The most powerful quasars have luminosities exceeding 1041 W, thousands of times greater than the luminosity of a large galaxy such as the Milky Way. The term "quasar" originated as a contraction of "quasi-stellar radio source", because quasars were first identified as sources of radio-wave emission, and in photographic images at visible wavelengths they resembled point-like stars. High-resolution images of quasars, particularly from the Hubble Space Telescope, have demonstrated that quasars occur in the centers of galaxies, and that some quasar host galaxies are strongly interacting or merging galaxies. Quasars are found over a very broad range of distances (corresponding to redshifts of roughly 0.1 to 7), and quasar discovery surveys have demonstrated that quasar activity was more common in the distant past. The peak epoch of quasar activity in the Universecorresponds to redshifts around 2, or approximately 10 billion years ago.As of 2011, the most distant known quasaris at redshift z=7.085; light observed from this quasar was emitted when the Universe was only 770 million years old. . . . #quasars #astronomy #astrophysics #beyond_earth #the_night_sky #stargazer #space_time #stars #stargazing #telescope #interstellar #deepsky #deepspace #hubble #cosmos #universe #astrophotography #outerspace #gravity #science #planets #matter #darkmatter #antimatter #spaceX #nature #darkmatter #darkenergy #beyondearth
